Fan's Forum: Aggies should play at Duke
I am a proud N.C. A&T alumnus who is responding to a letter ("A&T should play Elon and not run scared," Fans Forum, Oct. 10.)
Elon is certainly not in the league with Wake Forest, Duke or North Carolina in terms of the big payout. What do we have to prove just to keep Elon on the football schedule?
If we need a I-A challenge, A&T can come to Durham and we can play Duke. Not only would they have a decent payout, they would get a large supporting crowd. Durham is home to a large number of A&T alumni. I am sure A&T will be warmly supported by coming to Durham instead of Elon.
A&T has taken its lumps in the past, but why A&T will not pick up Elon is a subject not worth reporting.

I like it and playing Duke is definitely a game they need to work on getting. It may be more Aggies than Dukees at that one. Maybe not, but it will damn sure be close.

From a PR stand point, scheduling this game would go a long way in improving Duke's current relationship with the black community.

I would like to see that happen also. A&T tried around 2000 to schedule Duke for football but at that time Duke's AD wouldn't think of doing it.
A&T at one time did have a gentleman's agreement with Nebraska for football but Hayes wouldn't hear of it. The issue was settled by Renick by deciding not to play the game. Both Renick and Hayes felt the team would incur too many injuries due to a huge mismatch between the two teams. The payout discussed was $425,000, tops. Oh yea, the Nebraska AD wanted A&T's Band to play in the game as part of the deal.

Dee should be able to get this one. I thought we brought her in for her D1 contacts. Duke would be the perfect D1 opponent for a 1-AA school. Only problem is that they are only allowed to play 1 and they always play Atlantic 10 schools. They played Richmond this year and loss.

Its sounds like a good idea but....Would we really want to be put in this situation. It would seem like a slap in the face to Central on our behalf? Especially with the rape case still fresh on everyones minds. Even though its a different school its still an "HBCU".

Ain't going to happen. Dee have made it clear she will not play any D1 in state schools.
That why the UNLV was so attractive to her because that fit into her guide lines.
You all can talk about this until you turn blue. I ' m done with the subject matter.

Prior to the lacrosse team rape scandal we used to play Duke almost every year in basketball so I don't think it is totally impossible to have a future game with them in football. Maybe they can offer discount tickets to all local strippers or something for this game.
BTW: Todd is a realist and is under great pressure to supplement the budget for the entire athletic department. She may have stated in the past that she doesn't want to play in-state 1-As, but I'm sure she is willing to reconsider that stance if the situation is right.

Guys, I work in the news media and all....and respect the community affected by the case......but will race play THAT much into deciding the fate of you future opponents? If so, that's terrible!!!!!

I don't think it's any secret that Duke University is viewed in a negative light by some people in the black community right now, especially in the Triangle area.
I would hope the rape case wouldn't hinder us for getting a good payday against their football team, but you never know. You want to schedule games that benefit your program but you don't want to polarize your fanbase in the process.
Personally, I think we should try to get a game with them. It would be a good PR move for them to throw us, an HBCU, a $300k bone.

While we're a guaranteed win for them and a good sized crowd to boot, what does Duke have to gain? Good racial p.r.? The only thing I've heard or read about that rape case in the past two months is on this thread. A good crowd? Duke doesn't need a good football crowd. They have money. An easy win? They can schedule a dozen I-AAs for that. If I'm a Duke fan I'm not interested in my campus being overrun by A&T fans, even if it is for only four hours.
If they did decide to play us I know they wouldn't throw us more than Wake did. I think the only way they'd play us is if Todd pled with the A.D. for a favor. Otherwise they'll keep it to basketball.

Wow....this was a blast from the past. Seeing names like Dee Todd took me back to a very dark chapter in A&Ts athletic history. LOL. God is good....
