Considering that Spencer & Company are not paid by the University, I think that they are doing us a tremendous service by bringing the games into our homes. My biggest complaint is not having a "Rod Broadway Show" and a "Cy Alexander Show" on television (or just on the internet via the athletics department's website). FYI, FAMU the Rattler Boosters are paying host Keith Miles' production company $75,000 annually to broadcast the football games on radio and to produce and host the football coach's TV show. When football season ends I usually forget about our radio crew but you brought up the subject again. I am impressed that for 50 years we have gotten a football announcer for free...but really, how could anyone consider paying these guys for what they do? As folks come on this site complaining about the light fan turnout at the games, let me point out that our amateur radio announcing crew is another prime example of A&T's overall attitude toward marketing athletics. I realize we are an "agriculture" school and not into marketing and "branding" but eventually we will have to upgrade our sports image and that includes hiring some professional announcers I cannot tell you that "professional radio announcers" will put more fans in the stand but it will send a message that the A&T athletic program is professional. The good news for A&T sports is this crew is near the end of their "volunteer" efforts rather than near the beginning.

If YOU were to broadcast Aggie Football or Aggie Basketball for just one season, I would fully expect for you to be PAID (and not simply reimbursed) for your efforts.

Well we are 1 and 0 and heading into one of the biggest games we've played in Aggie Stadium in decades and I hope we have upgraded more than the team and the stadium name.

Okay, I've got a confession...I actually listen to the A&T football game last Saturday and it wasn't all bad. I was running late for the Chowan game and listen to the pregame radio show and the start of the first quarter. I was surprised. Al Swan did a good job explaining the game. The other two guys didn't add much to the telecast but they were bearable.
I still would like to have a "professional crew" announce the game but for the price (free) I guess I can live with our current radio announcers. Plus I don't plan on being late for another game so I will not have to listen to them again.

This will be Spencer's final season. We owe him( and Mel Swan) a lot

I've complained so much about our game broadcasts that I should at least give them some props when they do better. Don't get me wrong, I still think a more professional radio crew could improve our image and put more butts in the seats but they are the least of our marketing challenges.
A&T's athletic department has a long list of "needs" and marketing is lower down on that list. Eventually the AD will have more time and money to devote to marketing and promoting the teams.

I can't be for sure but if I were a betting man, I would put my money on Spencer Turkin from Curtis Media to pick up our play-by-play. He does our basketball road broadcasts on 1230 and 1320 AM and will do the broadcast this weekend on the Hampton - NSU swing in the Tidewater area if you want to check him out.
Turkin is really good and whole lot easier to listen to than that grating guy (the Sreech owl) from NCCU.

I can hardly wait. I'm convinced that a better on-air presence will help build our fan base. Really looking forward to hearing more games now.
