We have a nba star on campus. If the lakers thought enough to want to hire him to their coaching staff surely there must be some talent there. I know it sound crazy .. but the media attention would be insane.. I mean insane. he has the connections to bring people around him to build a program.. I don’t know this Shumpert guy but bases off what I read what could not be that much different. Why not! I suggested this a couple of months ago but the powers to be or the fan board big shots blew it off. JR would be great!!

Student assistant intern. That position already exists now.

Just asking but wouldn't job qualifications require the candidate to be a college graduate?

So we won't have a new coach for at least 8 months? The search really won't kick off until March/April? Maybe a silly question, but honest. Did the administration not have a coaching short list? Disheartening possible answer. Maybe no one on a possible list wanted the job.

That's crazy. There is still time to work the phones and get a new coaching staff in here well before this regular season begins.
I don't understand the complacency. Let's be honest: unless Shumpert was the whistle-blower who dropped a dime on Koach Jones, he probably was aware of the (alleged) violation when it happened. Just like Koach Jones was probably aware of what Joyner did to get himself fired when that happened.
Thus, there is probably not a snowball's chance in hell that Shumpert will be the head coach here after this season. So why not conduct a expediated search now, bring in a big name that the players and fan can rally behind, and fill that position immediately?

I agree, this decision had to be milling around for a couple of weeks, if not more. The AD could have been calling names from his pocket list or just called NSS, and we could have had a different twitter post. But c'mon man, that would require an expediency and forethought never seen. Now we have all season to vett coaches and make a hire just before school starts next fall.

I suggested this a couple of months ago but the powers to be or the fan board big shots blew it off. JR would be great!! Just asking but wouldn't job qualifications require the candidate to be a college graduate? I looked it up .. and it’s not clear whether it’s a policy or a norm. The verbiage used is “college coaches are expected to have a degree” .. in my world I would view that as a may not a shall.. but good point tho.

Just asking but wouldn't job qualifications require the candidate to be a college graduate? Typically it's required. That's why Sidney Lowe used St. Paul's for his degree and Deion used Talladega.

"Hey J.R., I know you are a multimillionaire who retired from the NBA in order to get the chance to be a fulltime college student and play golf, but we need you to put that dream to the side and coach our struggling men's basketball program."

I wouldn't jump to conclusions right out of the gate. We put out a very similar if not identical public statement when Ross left and some of same initial complaints surfaced over a supposed elongated timetable for replacing him. Two and half weeks later we had a new track coach hired that vast majority of people are very happy with. Also keep in mind that basketball practice starts the last week of September for D-1.
It would be disastrous both for the program and to the individual who accepted the post to try to learn the university landscape, get to know the players and establish relationships, put a new staff together, install your system and relocate your family all within less than 30 days. We've been through three coaches in a 5-year period. Just stop for a second.
There will never be a better opportunity for us take the appropriate time and really do our homework to finally get it right the first time, "again", by hiring a quality candidate who has the credentials and leadership skills be a really successful high mid-major coach, who has a serious basketball IQ, be able recruit at a high level and then develop the talent necessary to win in the CAA on a consistent long-term basis.
I rather be slow and deliberate and get it completely right than to be quick on the draw for the sake of public perception and then have to keep re-visiting this problem every 12-24 months.

I think the right move was made by naming an interim and conducting a thorough search. I would hope that we're able to find a good coach in this time frame. I might be in the minority on this but I don't know about JR. You guys know that being a good NBA player don't necessarily make you a good coach. I would hope that we not overreact and reach for a novelty... JMHO

Completely disagree. You do not have to be slow in order to get it completely right. Those two concepts do not go hand in hand. You can be deliberate and still have a sense of urgency. There are quality candidates who we can identify, vet, and hire right now - even before the 2002-03 basketball season begins. A serious athletic department would not throw away its first season in a brand new conference just because they wanted to slow walk the process of finding a new coach. BTW: A good AD should already have a short list of candidates in his pocket just in case of times like this.

But even a short list needs to be vetted properly and we both know that Earl is not the only one making this decision.
