Congratulations to the FCS championship on their viewership success.....for this "victory," how much were North Dakota State or James Madison compensated?
Say what you want, but if a magic wand was cast and the 24 top FBS teams were required to play in a tournament to where they would have to pay for home games, and no monetary compensation would come from such games, how many FBS school presidents and athletic directors would sign up for this change?

Decks, If you had a choice, would you have people look at you for free or cut you a check? FCS Championship won the viewership race this year, it’s first year on ABC. It was the only game in town

It was the only game in town THAT...plus, if you look at our (black folks) much smaller demographic footprint as opposed to theirs, our 2.345M viewership (with competing NFL and NCAA bowl games) up against their 2.7M viewership (with no competing games) doesn't look all that bad, IMHO.

can someone please tell me what attendance and viewership got to do with the "quality of football" played on the football field? ain't got nothing to do with how good the fcs champion is compared to the cb champion. why should i care how many people showed up in the snow in frisco, texas compared to "indoors" in atlanta?
i don't care about a "beauty contest", i care about being "the best" anywhere in the country at the fcs level even if only 5 people show for the championship game...

But this goes well beyond the quality of football played on the field. At the end of the day, college football is just the strongest marketing tool that we have to promote our university.
And we dont get the growth and visibility that this university has enjoyed over the past 5 years if only 5 people show up for our championship game.
The celebration bowl is a big reason why we are currently the largest HBCU in the nation. It has been stated by school officials that students are applying to A&T in record numbers, in part, because they see us on national TV, winning HBCU National titles.

We also don't get a lot of these recent recruits without having played and prevailed in the Celebration Bowl.
Recruits like rings and exposure. They don't like playing in front of 5 people in the middle of December in Bum F. Egypt.
And getting top recruits ultimately leads to a better quality of the football being played on the field.

I just hope the fictional 5 people who show up for your imaginary game have about $150K in each of their pockets to give to each team. Let me somewhat digress for a moment.... We have beaten ECU, Kent St, and Charlotte over these past years. Whether you consider them a weak FBS school or not, we beat them....... ......but do you ever ask yourself why we beat them? We beat them because THEY FIRST ENTICED US WITH A 6-FIGURE CHECK TO COME PLAY THEM!! None of these big wins would have happened if they didn't put money on the table. We didn't travel to ECU just for the "spirit of competition." We traveled there because there was a 6-figure check to be collected. What was the big phrase that captured the internet after we beat ECU....."BRING ME MY MONEY!" Money/financial security is at the core of everything......especially with collegiate athletics. As much as I donate to the AAF, I ain't got enough money to bankroll the entire athletics program to where our football team doesn't have to go to the CB to pick up a 6-7 figure paycheck.....maybe you do but choose not to donate a 6-7 figure check for personal reasons. At the end of the day, money matters. If anything, A&T is to be commended. They have done the "money vs quality competition" balancing act as well as anyone around. Ain't that many FCS teams (black or white) getting 6-figure checks from FBS schools without looking like they've been tricked out in the process. Not us - we've been taking money AND names. And finally...... you do realize A&T is getting $240K to play North Dakota State. We ain't even going up there just for the "spirit of competition." If $240K wasn't on the table, we'd be asking Parker Brothers Chicken to bankroll the Fried Chicken/Strawberry Soda Classic between us and Winston. Once again, I commend our athletic department for scheduling quality competition AND getting paid in the process. A&T may not be able to check off the boxes on every single person's wish list, but I'll be damn if a lot of boxes haven't gotten checked over these past few years that no one in a million years would have ever thought have gotten checked.....

This game really isn't about the money. $240 isn't a lot for a game halfway across the country for a team of our stature. Enough to cover our expenses with a few dollars left over. Heck we could have made more playing an FBS in this region if that was the goal. This game is about fulfilling Hilton and Washington's desire to compete against the best in FCS. Since we can only participate in the playoffs as a second place team this is a better option and certainly does check off a major box.

I think the point is that we didn't have to lose money, alienate our fanbase and limit our visibility just to fulfill that desire. That's why this matchup is so attractive.

As I said before, A&T has done a wonderful job balancing the competition vs economics aspects of college football. ......the game really isn't about the money.....but again, ask yourself - WOULD THIS GAME BE GOING DOWN IF WE DIDN'T GET $240K FROM IT??

North Dakota St is a FCS school paying another FCS school a guarantee greater that the $175K we got from App. St as provisional FBS in 2013. The money matters because it shows how unlevel the playing field is at the top of FCS. So from a symbolic standpoint... this is relevant, IMO.

This game wouldn't be going down without a $240K check.......we can talk competition all we want (which I am a proponent of). Beating folks makes all of us feel good....but getting these checks is what keeps the lights on. If only we can delegate more of the money to some quality green paint....but I digress.

Symbolically perhaps you're right but overall I don't think the financial guarantee is the primary motivation for playing this game. If NDSU wasn't the 8 time fcs national champ I doubt if we would have accepted the $240k.

All have valid arguments here The reality is that we are on the move to fulfil the dream that birthed the MEAC. We should all feel pride and proud but we still have a long way to go. We have cross the threshold of being able to attract top flight athletes to our conference ultimately.
