Didn't know SCSU band had gotten so small. I knew they had had some issues some time ago, but wow! They are smaller than Howard & NCCU. In the 70's & 80's they were very decent size wise and were the envy of the MEAC. They still have good sound to be so small.

SCSU were juggernauts until about 5 years ago...... If they regain their old numbers before we're able to slightly expand, I'll be semi upset. SCSU back in our Atlanta Football Classic days youtu.be/iNlK6wSrODQ

I was thinking the same thing about SCSU. I saw a post-on the broadcast-of enrollment of 2900. I really had a mindset of them having about 7000.

It was but once but the financial woes hit back in late 2000's their enrollment began a dramatic nose dive. They appear to have bottomed out but serious damage has been done and it will probably take at the very least a half a decade and some major cash infusions to reverse the effects.

I'm not sure Steat's ever had over 5,000 students. It's always been smaller than you would think, especially with the dominant sports programs and the big band over the years. The "front porch" theory (combined with big speakers) holds true.

I think I heard last year that they had a positive increase in students after several years of loss. In other words, last year the new freshmen coming in offset the students that graduated of quit. And that number was in the low hundreds. At that rate, it's tough to rebuild the enrollment and raise much needed revenue. I'm glad that State has survived those "bad old days" and hope they continue to grow their enrollment and their funds.

By the way, if you were wondering how so few SC State band members could sound so strong in the stands, think about where and how they were positioned in the stands. Their sound was amplified by those concrete bleachers and projected out of that corner.

It's hard to believe that the once great SC State's enrollment is less than WSSU but it is. Between some crooked and incompetent leaders, some shady financial deals, the financial crash of 2008, changes to student loans and the racist state government, they have struggled to climb out of a deep hole. Them rednecks would in the South Carolina Legislature would like nothing better than to see SC State to go away. And unfortunately, there also appears to be a few brothers and sisters down there that agree with them. Everytime I think of SC State's situation, I send another check and "thank you" note to Chancellor Martin!

Dang this hurts, I sent $ to Morris Brown, and then to Bennett. But of all the Black Students in SC, it seems like it would be King. The MEAC seems to have some dark clouds over it.
I used to see them in Charlotte-battle of the border- and that bsnd was deep.

I heard that Dr. George Washington Carver eventually didn’t even cash his checks at tuskeegee. It’s really is remarkable what Coach Pough is doing there. (Sending guys to the League ect).

SC State is struggling but Buddy has a few advantages that we don't have: 1. They are the only state funded HBCU in South Carolina. 2. Their entrance requirements are not a challenging as ours. 3. There are lots of talented Black high school athletes in South Carolina 4. Those Black athletes that aren't recruited by USC or Clemson, often only have SC State.
