Ed Hardin: How 'everything pretty much broke loose' at A&T-Florida A&M football game By Ed Hardin ed.hardin@greensboro.com 5 hrs ago
In the chaotic seconds after the end of N.C. A&T’s controversial overtime football loss to Florida A&M on Sunday, a flag was thrown. As a long and delayed game seemed to hang in doubt as the final FAMU touchdown was being reviewed, the flag suddenly disappeared. Sam Washington, the A&T coach, was never given a reason for the officials picking up the flag, but he thinks he knows why. “Fear,” he said. “They were scared.” FAMU defeated the visiting Aggies 34-31 after the final play was reviewed. Accounts of those who were there suggested that an already tense, even dangerous, atmosphere that had boiled all day long was close to getting worse. Washington had already called for security from his players, not because of the other team but because of fans in the stands behind their bench. A spokesman for FAMU confirmed that A&T’s sideline was directly in front of the Rattlers band and student section. The entire day seemed to be a recipe for disaster. Washington admitted his team lost its composure in what devolved into a halftime scuffle outside the locker rooms, a fight that resulted in ejections of players and even a FAMU coach. A&T coach Sam Washington apologizes after Aggies involved in scuffle at Florida A&M By Jeff Mills jeff.mills@greensboro.com and Ed Hardin ed.hardin@greensboro.com
GREENSBORO — A&T football coach Sam Washington apologized to the university community today in his first comments since a scuffle broke out between the Aggies and Florida A&M at halftime of their football game Sunday. "First of all, I just want to apologize to everyone," Washington said at the football team's weekly news conference. "And I promise you we will get this taken care of, and it will never happen again." A&T lost Mac McCain, Elijah Bell and Stephen Davis Jr. for the second half, and Florida A&M assistant coach Ralph Street, Tim Williams, Andrew Davis and Jalen Brayboy also were tossed. A&T is awaiting word from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regarding any further penalties or whether any of the three players would be required to miss playing time during the homecoming game against Howard on Saturday at BB&T Stadium. Hmmph.
It was almost unavoidable. Brilliant play on the part of famu's athletics administration or whoever signed off on switching sides like that for the most important game of the year. Take every edge you can get and run with it.

While waiting for that final call by the officials right after the last play in overtime, I half-jokingly said to some other A&T and FAMU fans that the officials are talking to FAMU Security to see if they can assure their personal safety if they called offensive pass interference.
I think that the answer was, "NO.'

I ain't mad with FAMU for doing whatever it took to get the W on Sunday.....
Aggie Stadium 2020 vs FAMU: A&T's band needs to be MIDFIELD ON THE VISITOR SIDE......flagged by students on both sides.
In 2020 - it will be our turn to return the favor. For the FAMU game ONLY - move the band behind them; play EVERY SINGLE SECOND you are allowed to play when their offense is on the field. The students need to talk the most amount of isht possible (without engaging in any type of physical altercations).
Turnabout is fair play.....and for any Aggies who buy reserved seats on the visitor side, they're gonna have to suck it up for that one game and be accommodated with seats elsewhere in Aggie Stadium.

50% of me would love that.
The other 50% of me would rather beat them straight up.

I recall and posted on the gameday thread, before official said the score was being reviewed, his mic came on and you could hear him say "do you have offensive pass interference".
Also, as far as I can remember, FAMU locker rooms have always been set up that way, opposite of your sideline, whereas to get into locker room you have to cross paths. I would have thought by now the league would at minimum have forced FAMU into a protocol for teams getting to their respective locker rooms, at halftime and at games end.
We've had previous incidents at FAMU because of this and also with their band being on the sideline within the team area after halftime.
Dont want too much government but in this instance in believe the league should step in to rectify this going forward.
Now the fans, you just have to deal with, but at least try and keep the sideline relegated to just the team and credentialed individuals

Our track lessens the effect so much, we far away from the sidelines and players

Neighborhood, it would be more effective to play this game in November at night. The Rattlers would be freezing their tail off and focused more on the weather.

They went up to Boone in December and beat the crap out of App State and then almost beat Youngstown two weeks later in Ohio. I think heat effects people more than cold when you're playing an active sport like football. I recall and posted on the gameday thread, before official said the score was being reviewed, his mic came on and you could hear him say "do you have offensive pass interference". I heard that too. But at that point I knew they weren't going to even try to get all them cats off the field.

The conference will probably step in with some new rules. This is a blackeye for the schools as well as the conference. Reputation is 100% of your stature in academia, which enhances your research, academic programs and attraction of good students.

Sooooo......two questions:
1. Did FAM really change their placement and seating of the band and the student section JUST for this game and purposefully place them behind our bench??
2. For those who actually saw the game and care to weigh in OBJECTIVELY.....was there actual offensive pass interference on the last play? They had a poor camera angle so I couldn't see what happened.

No we didn’t...the band had been on the east side of the stadium consistently forever. The visiting team has been over there consistently for about 11 seasons. There’s been three known issues with teams, 1 vs Howard in 2005 and 2 vs A&T (2007 and 2019) And the P.I. was initially for a WR pick on the other side of the field...the flag wasn’t thrown near where the ball was caught
