Fourth-down blues: A&T stung by loss to analytical Duke offense By Jeff Mills jeff.mills@greensboro.com Sep 10, 2019 GREENSBORO — To go, or not to go? That is the question. At least when it comes to fourth down and short yardage. N.C. A&T is back at football practice this week, coming off a 45-13 loss at Duke in a money-making guarantee game. The Aggies fell three spots to No. 17 in the FCS Coaches’ Poll, and the $350,000-plus payday from a Power Five program does little to salve the wound of a loss. “Any game you lose stings a little bit,” A&T senior linebacker-safety Antoine Wilder said. “I don’t care if we’re playing Alabama, we’re trying to win. I don’t believe in that whole, ‘It’s an FBS and you’re expected to lose.’ We don’t expect to lose. They put on pads just like we put on pads. They tie their cleats the same way we do.” But they approach fourth down differently. For the rest of the story:www.greensboro.com/sports/college/ncat/fourth-down-blues-a-t-stung-by-loss-to-analytical/article_4d02398e-877a-5b92-8177-f4f599849927.html#1 Might not hurt for our coaching staff to invest in the book. I have the utmost confidence in the way they coach but looking at what Cutcliffe's been able to do with perpetually suffering Duke, I'm just sayin'. A change in mindset could really put stress on opposing teams. Granted, it could put stress on our team if it results in bad field position but it appears the book addresses all that in detail. Call me silly but I thought many coaches on all levels have some sort of stats script in their minds, at least, when it comes to situational football? Like it thought it was commonplace to have it pre-determined on when to go for it on 4th down depending on the distance to first down and placement on the field?

I think it's commonplace knowledge of when to go for two. But fourth down is usually a punt, a field goal, or occasionally a go for it.

I think it was "we are a much better team", therefore if we don't make it, we will still beat the crap out of this team. Has to do with little or no respect, and a message to the opponent.

i agree. this was a "bcs" team versus an "fcs" team. our overall talent level was inferior to that of duke. so why was it necessary in the 4th quarter to go for it on 4th downs? i mean, i understand using analytics and all in closely competitive games. but you're up by 3 td's late in the 2nd half against an fcs team, yet you still feel the need to go for it on 4th downs?
i mean, analytics notwithstanding, at what point do you use your "common sense"?

Means you didn't read the article or the quote I posted. Says Cutcliffe went for it on fourth more than almost anybody and he based his philosophy on a book based on the analytics of going for it on fourth.

I was responding to Sixties oleschool. I didn't see your post until later because my computer's been ridiculous slow at times. But I wholeheartedly agree that in the fourth quarter it wasn't necessary unless they had backups in they wanted to gain experience running with the same go for it on fourth anywhere on the field mindset.
If it was backups, I could halfway excuse it because you never know when they'll be needed and they'll need to know how you do things in live game situations. But if you're dominating like that and you still have starters going for it in the fourth, not cool. Not to mention you'll need to give your special teams some action too.

I don’t think it was just us...meaning a FCS team...this guy is going to go for it on fourth and short because statically he feels he can convert...and he is right.
Most coaches are fearful of what night happen if they don’t make it. He is thinking about what will happen if his team does make it.
It’s just ingrained that you punt, or go for a field goal...but do we really have to do that...
One thing is for sure...it in demoralizing to a defense when you go for it in fourth down and make it when they are expecting to get off the field

It's all about control and who owns the playing field . Duke just sent a message to the FCS and there fans that A&T is not Alabama or BCS and we can do as we wish because we are BCS . What did you expect from Duke RESPECT!!!!!!LOL

I disagree with C. Washington about duke going for it on 4 downs. If you was in David Cutcliff shoes you may would had gone for it as well. He was not trying to make this a close game. We should not get mad to anyone accept why we could not stop it but one time out of five. Call it disrespect, unfair whatever this is football Duke had more to lose than us if we was able to pull this off therefore he had to take some calculated risk.
Yes i was mad they went for it but I was even madder we could not stop them for the most part. That's my little opinion.
I am more madder we drop losing to a Power 5 program in the Coaches poll and Kennesaw State(losing to kent state) remain #9 in the polls that some bull &$&$^%^%^.
