Out of the over 50K grads, there are numerous folks who have made major contributions to society. The first thing would be to have all of you posters who love the band and want to honor the Parkers, is to approach the band leadership about having the Parkers to participate in the Homecoming half time show. Have a live chat with the students. A workshop with band members. The band leadership can present their request to the administration and get the necessary funds to bring them back to campus. Melvin Parker was a great drummer. However, to honor Parkers, vetting would be necessary. What else have they done that impacted society, as well as the university. If you are serious, maybe you can get it done. I think what you're talking about is a separate issue from him or his brother receiving an honorary degree . How the band chooses to honor them has nothing to do with the university granting an honorary degree .

Totally agree with Freeze. By the way Maceo is from Kinston. After reading his memoir , he still lives there when he is not performing . Salute to K-Town .

How the band chooses to honor them has nothing to do with the university granting an honorary degree . I addressed the question of the Honorary Degree, by mentioning that vast numbers of graduates, many of whom have made fantastic contributions to society and the university are also deserving of such an honor. Since honorary degrees aren't just given away, there is always the vetting process (mentioned) by a select university committee. They will ask the question "What else have they done that impacted society, as well as the university." I just threw in the suggestion about inviting the Parkers to participate in a half time show with the band. I think that would be a great addition to Homecoming. A committee will determine whether the Parkers are worthy of an Honorary Degree provided someone submits their names for that honor.

Why would someone who has actually earned a degree ,be deserving of an honorary degree ? Of course anyone considered should be properly vetted , but lets be real it's an "honorary degree" ,he won't be able to return to school and get his master's if he were to receive one . If anyone has to ask how he has impacted society ,after performing with the likes of James Brown ,George Clinton ,and Prince to name a few ,all of these people revolutionized the music industry in one way or another . BTW does anyone know the names of the persons who have received an Honorary Degree in the past?

oldschool, I know who Maceo and Melvin Parker are, and have seen them perform. I think I'll end this discussion with you on this topic. You seem to want to engage in a debate about how much you think you know. So, I am no longer interested in engaging in a back and forth with you. Have a good evening.
