I saw this yesterday...wasn't surprised but I was hurt. As a bandhead, I've read The 5th Quarter for years and loved it. At one point if you were an HBCU band fan you could find it all on this site...comments, trash talk, analysis, and videos.
But for some reason, over the past year the readership, comments and posts have died. Don't know why but band fans just stopped posting on the site. So this once great HBCU institution is gone. Hope somehow another message board or vehicle surfaces that helps document HBCU bands and their fans reactions.

BTW: You can tell the band geeks they can start posting over here ... but they need to mind their manners.

Evolution...the bandheads started using Facebook to do the same thing they could do on 5Q. The same thing happened with a Fraternal Group (on Yahoo of all things) that I was a member of.

I think the game changed when YouTube postings of band performances are now almost instantaneous. The banter that used to go on about what band was better just became comments on YouTube. It was also about building relationships. Also as many of us who remember "The Ranks" got older the intensity just died down. I was talking to a BGMM alumni a couple of weeks ago and he was talking about how the kids today are just "softer". It used to be about WAR with the other band. It seems now to be more about performance than fierce competition. It was that competition and dedication to the craft of marching that made the 5th quarter a great place to hang out. Thank you, Christie. 20 years of excellence.

Not so much in the SWAC...they still seriously hate each other's bands, alumni, fans, cheerleaders, faculty, mascots, etc...! But I disagree with the comment about these kids are "softer!" My azz! You obviously haven't been to the BGMM Band Camp or late Friday night practice on the potato patch behind Aggie Stadium. Hell a lot of guys that went to Army Boot Camp with me would have struggled with that Band Camp! And you're right it is more about performance than fierce competition but trust me... it's the sole mission of the BGMM to "KAOS" (Kick Azz On Saturday) and any other day another band takes the field!

On the softer comment, he was mainly referring to game day competitiveness, aggressiveness, and intensity. And as many alumni do, he was comparing it to the Hodge days.

I know it has been a while since I've posted in here and I know both Mike and Christy (A&T alum) who both live in Durham. Many band fans no longer posted on The5thQuarter because ever since The Real HBCU Band Uncut was started on Facebook that is where many band fans took their talents too. I will miss the5th because that's where I really got exposed to A&T's band before I had marched there.

Real "bandheads" with experience in music posted on The 5th Quarter. From what I've seen The Real HBCU Band Uncut is just folks promoting their band and trashing everybody else.
