Bethune-Cookman University interim president: School is in 'crisis' but not closing Annie MartinContact Reporter Orlando Sentinel Bethune-Cookman University is facing “an existential threat,” the interim president said Tuesday as he vowed to correct financial problems and guide the institution back into good standing with its accrediting organization. Hubert Grimes spoke with reporters, addressing what he described as a “crisis” stemming from myriad issues, chiefly a bad dorm deal that is expected to cost the university millions. “Our problems reflect the culmination of years of inadequate accountability, suspect governance and, quite frankly, inexcusable management decisions,” he said. Grimes took the helm of the Daytona Beach university in July 2017. His predecessor, Edison Jackson, retired early after a Daytona Beach News-Journal investigation found the university was suffering from growing debt and that a new dorm, originally estimated at $72.1 million, will cost $306 million over 40 years. B-CU alum president calls for dismissal of board chairman Michelle Carter-Scott By Shannon Green Orlando SentinelIn the latest trouble for beleaguered Bethune-Cookman University, the school’s National Alumni Association president on Monday pushed to have the board of trustees chairwoman, Michelle Carter-Scott, dismissed and the board restructured. Robert Delancy said at a news conference that Carter-Scott was in part responsible for the school’s $306 million dormitory crisis as Carter-Scott, mother of former Orlando Magic star Vince Carter, was on the board when the construction project was approved. Delancy also questioned more than half a million dollars in scholarships for B-CU students that were awarded on behalf of her son’s foundation, Embassy of Hope. Shortly after the news conference, B-CU students staged a walk-out from classes to demonstrate their frustration about the lack of action and transparency regarding the school’s financial future. “The NAA supports the complete and prompt restructuring of the board of trustees starting with the immediate dismissal of the current board chairman Michelle Carter-Scott and the vice chairman United Methodist bishop Kenneth Clark,” Delancy said. “Most of the people who are on the board of trustees are the same people who were there and voted for this dorm deal. So the question from the NAA standpoint is, how can you solve this problem when you got there and allowed it to happen?” For the rest of the story:www.orlandosentinel.com/opinion/audience/shannon-green/os-ae-bcu-scholarship-fund-michelle-carter-scott-20181014-story.html
