After watching some of the old game films Aggie Groove shared, I have a new appreciation for what Trey Scott meant to this offense.
He was not only Raynard's favorite safety valve, but he also had the speed to catch a simple drag route and take it all the way to the house.
That is really gonna be a tough player to replace.

I think Cartwright will be running more safety-valve routes I suspect. But, that will be contingent upon our front-5 keeping Lamar Raynard upright.

I think they should use a bigger receiver as a pass catching tight end. Or use Hill...we know Hill does not have the speed that Scott had. So, Scott posed major matchup problems for linebackers.

If the running game is clicking you want have to worry about the linebackers keying on the TE in playaction . All plays start with the O-line !

This spring I saw them throw to the slot receiver position way more than I have any recent years. That is how the Slot Machine, Isaiah Hicklin, earned his nickname. The slot guys give you a reliable target in the middle of the field, but the downside is that they dont tend to help out in the power running game as much as a legitimate tight end would.

I just looked at Scott's bio from last year and he is 6-1, 220 lbs....BTW, Higgins is 6-2, 225 lbs. He sounds like Scott's replacement......

The only thing that concerns me about utilizing the slot a lot, is if the TE or WR starts tipping balls. Over the years our passing game has been outside the numbers to limit tipped balls turning into turnovers.
Now if we have a guy we can trust to make those catches and not brick hand them, we're good. Hopefully Hicklin develops into that trustworthy, "wes welker" type

Most of the routes I saw from the slot receivers this spring were quick outs toward the sideline.

This team did not 'beat itself' last year with penalties. Also I look forward to our QB play this year. Lamar came in improved last year. I also liked that Carter came in ( I think during the bowl game- after a shaken up Lamar) for one play, and threw a strike I believe.
I wonder how our kicking game will look? And will we pass the ball to Cartwright in open space a bit more?

Kicking game scares the bejesus out of me. Will never forget that look on Ruiz's face near the end of the Celebration Bowl. He did not want any more smoke.

Ruiz was considered a big time talent if you remember he had and offer from. Big 10 school. Nevertheless nerves certainally got the best of him. For him I don’t think it’s leg strength but confidence although he could use 15 pounds.
Remember first couple games we had like 5 blocked extra points and coach had sure up the blocking coming from the left side ; he took a back up off and put Parker over there. Poor blocking or not if executed timely and kicked properly it should be near impossible to block an extra point as no angle is needed

He can boom field goals from 50 plus but, the trajectory of the ball when it first leaves the foot is the key. With the talent in college, you cannot just line up and boom a line drive kick and be successful as a kicker. So, that's the transition for him, I think he will make that transition and our kicking game will become a strength instead of a weakness.

wow, feels a little weird that the strength of our offense is the passing game. traditionally that's always been our running game...
