I am happy for Coach Hester. Could he take with him Carter or Hicklin at QB, Baker at RB, and Paterson at WR.

Cant downplay just how big of an impact this will have. Terrible, terrible timing. This is Washington's first real test. Balance the ship and forge ahead. Yet I have to believe that this didn`t just happen, something has been cooking, on the surface it looks messy, and uncharacteristic of a Broadway/Hilton operation. Hester is a seasoned and successful Divll,Head Coach he doesn't need two years to develop a Divll program.

That Division 2 cupcake game to start the season sure looks like it would've been the better way to go. We could take Daddy Tiger's advice and give Melvin Spears a call...

Broadway been doing this for years. You work the kinks out your system. Build confidence, give the inexperienced playing time, work all aspects of the game...especially your weaknesses. It’s proven...has worked for us for years...yet, we are determined to fix what ain’t broken. You start slow, and build up heading into the conference schedule. Why we insist on ignoring a “Hall of Famer” and one of the best coaches in recent HBCU history is beyond me. Broadway didn’t schedule with a chip on his shoulder or with something to prove...how many times did we here him say “Every win is a good win” despite the performance or opponent.

But Spears has been a disgruntled ex-employee just about everywhere he’s coached. He could be a program-destroyer, based on past history.

We are short two assistant coaches going into the season and have a first year head coach. I'm not liking this at all...

Flashback, 2002: A&T loses another assistant
7-26-02
By CRAIG T. GREENLEE, Staff Writer News & RecordGREENSBORO -- Two weeks before the start of preseason football practice, N.C. A&T has lost another assistant coach. Allan Gerber, the Aggies' offensive coordinator for four years, is stepping down to take a similar position at Randolph-Macon College, an NCAA Division III program in Ashland, Va. Gerber, who also will coach the offensive line coach, will join his new school next week. "This is a family decision and nothing else," said Gerber, who helped A&T post a 35-11 record with an NCAA playoff appearance during his tenure. "There are no pressures on me. There are no politics involved. Family is the priority. "I have a 2-1/2-year-old son (Brett) who I haven't been able to spend much time with and that needs to change. I don't feel like I'm leaving with any feelings of malice. I have nothing but love for coach Bill Hayes, and I'll always be indebted to him for giving me the opportunity to further my career." Hayes acknowledges that Gerber's departure comes at a bad time. But he's not holding any grudges.
"In coaching, you always walk a thin line between how much time you spend with the kids on your team and the time you spend with your own kids," Hayes said. "In too many instances, coaches miss out on their kids' formative years because of their jobs. Allan chose family and I applaud his decision. He did a great job here, the numbers (wins and losses) speak for themselves. I wish him and his family well."
With Gerber's departure, Hayes' staff is one man short. But that doesn't mean he will add another assistant. Gerber had been relieved of duties as a position coach for 2002, which allowed him more time to focus on being a coordinator. Last year, Gerber was the quarterbacks coach and he previously coached the offensive line.
For now, Hayes has not made a decision about who will do the play-calling. There's a possibility that Hayes might handle the task, or it could be former Appalachian State assistant Rocky Lewis, who became A&T's quarterbacks coach last spring.
"We have time to decide how we want to handle that," Hayes said. In terms of staff stability, the first seven months of 2002 have not been kind to Aggie football. Gerber is the fifth assistant to leave since January. Here's a rundown: Defensive coordinator Wayne Hicks was named head coach at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne the first week in January. Sam Washington, who coached the Aggies' special teams as a part-timer last season, was named defensive coordinator at Mississippi Valley State. Linebackers coach John Falvey left coaching to pursue a career in private business. Defensive line coach Terrell Williams left just before the start spring practice to coach at Youngstown State. "Allan's situation is different from the others," Hayes said. "But the reason why we've had a revolving door with our coaches is economics. That's the case 95 percent of the time. If we don't find a way to do something about coaches' salaries, we'll continue to lose them." In accepting the job at Randolph-Macon, Gerber is looking to help turn around a program that finished 4-6 a year ago and has gone through three offensive coordinators in five years. "Allan has good ties here in Virginia, having coached at VMI and Washington & Lee," said Scott Boone, the Yellow Jackets' head coach. "I think his experience and background as a coordinator and offensive line coach will help us get to where we want to be." www.hbcusports.com/forums/threads/a-t-loses-another-assistant.9583/

The question is this has the players change our left. I THINK RAYNARD, Cartwright, Johnson,McCain and Bell are still playing. This Staff and players win games not one Coach leaving changes that.Aggies Relax This is not just ONE coach, it is our Offensive Coordinator. The thing that moved the program from good to great was the ability to put together an offensive attack that complemented a great defense. The ability to move the ball in multiple ways, make the right calls and adjust to what defenses were doing took time even for Hester. And Hester had been a head coach for 11 years. And remember Broadway didn't get the right guy the first time. I worry. I certainly don't like the idea of Barnett and Gibbs "sharing" the role. That job needs a single leader with the confidence to make the right decisions on the big stage. We need to get an experienced guy. With Washington's inexperience as a head coach we already approach the season with caution. We can't add to it. Washington has had trouble making a decision regarding a Defensive Coordinator and that's his specialty. This will be his second opportunity to make a decision (that he didn't make). He has to make a good decision here. If this were January, it would be different. Players report in two weeks for summer school. Let's see what happens. well stated. i agree with everything you said...

By the way, we went 4-8 in 2002 and Hayes got fired.
I believe he ended up bringing in Linwood Ferguson as the last-minute Offensive Coordinator and we switched from the wing-T to a new spread formation.
Jason Douglas, a JUCO transfer from California, was the starting quarterback for most of that year.

Barton College?
He'll starve.
My main hope is he isn't able to entice anybody on staff to roll with him.
Washington needs to let go and get a DC and OC or promote from within and backfill. With the almost unreal expectations before him he will need to handle head coaching duties and nothing else this year. Just my opinion.

The Barton College choice is just weird to me. Your at A&T and coming off some pretty good years. Barton College? I just dont see it. I'm a little puzzled.

i wonder if he got a pay raise? or did he simply jump at the first opportunity to become a head coach again? or, did he feel he couldn't work for washington as his head coach? or, did he feel he should've got our head gig instead of washington? man, i would luv to know the answer to those questions...

Could be all of the above. Coaches are former athletes and they consider themselves the best and deserving of what they want when they perform well. I wouldn't blame him if any of the above were his reason to leave. He was at a Div2 school before, so you never know. He could miss that vibe. Personally, Aside from taking Hester, I'm glad they are starting a program. More opportunities for young men in NC to play college football. Recent programs include UNCC, Campbell, and now Barton. Maybe even more that I cant remember right now.

I figured this would happen at some point. So congrats to Coach Hester on his move.
I'm less concerned about this than most. Coach Gibbs has been a de-facto run-game coordinator since Hester took over as OC. That won't really change anything. And my #1 concern about the staff make-up was Coach Barnette leaving for an OC job. Welp... problem solved. We just need a WR coach.
Barnette is going to call plays and coordinate the passing game and Gibbs will co-ordinate the run game.
For Barnette... it's a dream come true because he gets to call plays with his star pupil Lamar Raynard in his senior season. And being honest... if you're Coach Hester and you wanted to set up Coach Barnette with the best opportunity to succeed (and an opportunity opens up for you)... then something like this is an option.
So with 24 hrs to digest this, I get it.
