as long as they don't get rid of that "aggie bulldog" that surrounds our jumbotron, i'm down with upgrading the scoreboard. just don't get rid of that "aggie bulldog"! that "aggie bulldog" makes our jumbotron the best there is at any hbcu, even the new hbcu stadiums...

Seriously, just put the Ag dept on the case.
I don't know if it's true or not, but I'd heard that Mo Smith designed the drainage system for the field for his senior thesis or project or something. I remember when that field held more water than a pregnant camel.
The Ag building is across the skreet from the stadium. What more hint do we need?

I've heard that we use the grass that quickly browns in the Fall(cant think of the name right now). It stays with strong roots to run and play on well, but just turns brown earlier. Thats why we have painted it in the past(which I dont even know if thats true). Its cheaper to maintain a decent playing surface but it doesn't stay green once the cold comes. Bermuda Grass according to the Physical Plant folks

Bermuda Grass according to the Physical Plant folks I've always hated Bermuda Grass. I can't get rid of that crap in my own yard. A lot of school's with natural grass have some type of heating system under the field along with the drainage system. this keeps the grass from turning brown in the winter months.

the good thing about our grass is that it doesn't die in the fall, we don't have any "mudholes" on our football field in the fall. the grass still holds up strong, but it just turns "brown" and cosmetically, that doesn't look very good. so even if we don't replace our surface, at least our grass doesn't get all "beatup" in the fall. other than turning brown, it holds up quite well which is probably why they're not in such a big hurry to replace it...

A lot of school's with natural grass have some type of heating system under the field along with the drainage system. this keeps the grass from turning brown in the winter months. fertilizer and proper watering (if necessary) works even better and is less expensive. but unless we produce our own fertilizer, fertilizer costs money and must be applied using the appropriate spreader(s). doesn't seem to be highly expensive to me...

Yep, Bermuda grass does that. It's the last to green in the spring and first to brown in the fall. But its tough as crap! Which is why we have dont have many mud holes or worn out spots. I couldn't remember the name on my earlier post.

Before the drainage system went in some years back we put a combination of mostly Rye and some Bermuda down and it stayed green well into December. Problem with that grass was a shallow root system. Aggie Monster is right. When it rained, the Rye tore up like cheap tissue paper during a game. We normally play only two games at home in November every other year so spray paint it like many baseball venues and golf courses a do after the first light frost of the season.
I'm a traditionalist when it comes to football. The game was intended to be played on grass and not a rug covered in shredded tire chips.

Was that rye or wild onions? The field used to be terrible.

LOL. A little bit of both. Coach Howell used to brag about A&T having the advantage in the rain. He said we had the best "mudders" in the MEAC or the CIAA. And more often than not we won our fair share in the mud.

My grass is green year round even when it in the 20's at night . You have to overseed with rye in September it comes up very fast and grows on top of the Bermuda. Previous poster is correct the blades are thin and the roots are shallow but even after being torn up with cleates it will restablish itself fast
An yes I was a horticulture / landscape architect major til I changed it to business

I like the grass plus there are so many other things we need, I hate to spend money on turf. The way I figure, if we are winning, who cares if the grass is brown. By the way, I've heard all the rumor about turf and injuries and I became a believer last season. Man, we got some major injuries playing on that rug at Howard last year. I don't know if Howard's turf was different than Elon's but we came out of DC the walking wounded. As long as it drains well and the players can out run our opponents, I say stick with the grass.

I dont really see the argument about injuries on turf. Half the league(and not just the MEAC) is on turf. Their teams are just fine.

I don't know if Howard's turf was different than Elon's but we came out of DC the walking wounded. As long as it drains well and the players can out run our opponents, I say stick with the grass. man, i'm glad you aren't responsible for deciding whether to replace our grass surface or not because you don't even care if our grass turns "brown". i don't think you realize how embarrassing it is when our home games appear on "espn" with brown grass all over the place and the "whole world" sees that a&t doesn't give a darn about the appearance of its on campus facilities. that's a big turn off to recruits, corporate sponsors, as well as most alums. and it says to the whole world that a&t doesn't give a darn about the "quality" of their facilities. there's a reason that you never see pwc's on tv having "brown" grass on their football field. man, everybody has a right to their own opinion. but attitudes like yours would destroy the "image" of a&t if we didn't care about how the whole world perceives a&t. we're not rich, but doggone it we don't have to look straight up "poe" on national tv! man, i'm just glad that someone at a&t understands how important it is to put our best foot forward when "anything" that represents a&t appears on international tv. "apparently" somebody made a decision to paint our grass green when we played hampton on espn last year and i'm extremely happy that they did because our grass looked absolutely "beautiful" during that broadcast. i was very proud that america got to see our stadium looking like a first class facility on tv, i just wish that it looked that way all the time. i can agree with you that i don't mind having a natural grass surface. but where i disagree with you is that i absolutely do care if our grass turns "brown" during the football season because it reflects poorly on a&t, especially when our games are played on espn, the "worldwide" leader in sports broadcasting. if we don't have "pride" in the way that our stadium appears on international tv, then why do we have a slogan that says "aggie pride"? in the past, we have done things “on the cheap” for too doggone long! that’s the primary culprit as to why we experienced so much “turmoil” in our athletic department over the last decade or more. that’s an attitude that i hope is gone forever!! there’s a cost associated with being division 1. if we’re not prepared to pay that cost, then we need to drop the hail down to a division that we are willing to pay for...
