Stranger Things at North Carolina CentralHBCU Digest April 19, 2018
Less than 24 hours before today’s investiture of North Carolina Central University Chancellor Johnson Akinyele, news broke that a lawsuit had been filed against him and two members of the University of North Carolina System Board of Trustees by a former NCCU vice-president, alleging improper spending on a luxury SUV and being fired after raising concerns over an attempt to skirt procurement rules on a multi-million construction contract for student housing.
The lawsuit comes two years after Dr. Akinyele was named acting chancellor of the university, following the medical leave of absence and later death of former Chancellor Debra Saunders-White, who a year prior settled several lawsuits from former faculty and executive employees who accused her of discrimination and improper spending – two years after she was named chancellor...

Lawsuit: NCCU chancellor tried to steer million dollar housing contract, bought $70K SUV with state funds
Thursday, April 19, 2018 05:51PM
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A former Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance at North Carolina Central University has filed the lawsuit against the school and its chancellor, claiming he was fired for speaking out against the misuse of state funds. Benjamin Durant said he was wrongfully terminated in January because he questioned the purchase of a luxury SUV for Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye's personal use. Durant claimed Akinleye was unhappy with the Nissan Pathfinder he was issued and wanted a more expensive GMC Yukon Denali - which cost roughly $70,000. NCCU students angry over chancellor's alleged misdeeds
Posted 3:07 p.m. yesterday Updated 6:22 p.m. yesterday
By Sarah Krueger, WRAL reporter
DURHAM, N.C. — As North Carolina Central University formally installed Johnson Akinleye as chancellor on Thursday, many students were fuming over allegations that he used state money to buy a $70,000 SUV and tried to steer the contract for a campus housing development to a specific vendor. The allegations are laid out in a lawsuit filed Tuesday by former Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Benjamin Durant, who claims Akinleye fired him in January after he questioned the chancellor's actions. "I just think it’s sneaky. You know? You don’t want nobody sneaky running the school," sophomore Tatyana Nealy said. "He gotta go. He gotta go," freshman Dashawn Stephens said. State officials have confirmed that $69,403 in university funds were used to purchase a GMC Yukon Denali with leather seats and other accessories for Akinleye. The SUV was later sold by the state at auction for $57,105. Durant's lawsuit alleges that Akinleye wanted the Yukon because he was dissatisfied with the state-owned Nissan Pathfinder provided to him. But the state Department of Administration, which oversees the state motor fleet, denied Akinleye's initial request as a "luxury vehicle" not available through state contract. DURHAM - Born one of 22 children in Nigeria, Johnson Akinleye said he learned early the meaning of "survival of the fittest."
He walked three miles and back each day to elementary school, because, he said, "My parents gave no room for compromise when it came to education." His long educational journey brought him to Durham, where he was officially installed as the 12th chancellor at N.C. Central University on Thursday. He succeeds Debra Saunders-White, who died of cancer in 2016. For the rest of the story: www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article209298734.html
