Great article. When you're sitting in the stands complaining about what our team is or isn't doing, it's easy to forget the rough road the coaching staff had to take to get there. I'm glad they are willing to endure the day to day grind!

Great guy! Got to know him while he was on the basketball staff down in Tallahassee.

Nice piece of writing. I love the historical reference back to McClendon and Naismith. I got to meet Coach McClendon growing up in Durham at McClendon Gymnasium.

I hope this turns out well for the fellow he brings a lot of energy. I will caution on the honeymoon period being confused for long term.
We now have the time to find a person that can really build a program. We have the most attractive HBCU in the land and we have more to offer a college athlete than most PWI's. It makes zero sense for our bball program to be in the shape that we are in.
Although I believe in the underdog story just like the next guy, I would like for us to at least look for a top notch coach - a Broadway type, to come and get this thing together. Someone who is not satisfied with winning conference games but can put us on the map as a mid major like our football team, track team, baseball team, etc..

i dunno, folks. right out the gate, i supported giving coach jones a chance to earn the job, but i had some doubts after watching the last 10 or 15 minutes of the famu game. however, in hindsight it appears that my concerns (lack of defensive pressure) in the famu game may have very well been attributed to lack of conditioning to play uptempo ball for a full 40 minutes because now that they appear to have their "legs" under them, our defensive pressure looks much better, especially our pressure in the 2nd half.
so to me, as of right now, if the team keeps playing as well as they have been for the last 3 games? to me it would be hard to justify hiring someone else for the job, especially given that he was a key player in recruiting harris to play for us next season...

A&T MBB's first 13 games: 57.6 ppg, 10.5 apg, 16.7 TO/g, 3-10 record, -12.6 ppg scoring margin
5 games under Coach Jones: 94.6 ppg, 18.6 apg, 12.2 TO/g, 4-1 record, +19.4 ppg scoring margin
13 MEAC games left in the regular season. We'll keep tracking as we go.

Folks, Please keep it real. The last 4 teams we have played have been God Awful, so to compare records and stats from the first part of the season is disingenuous. FAMU, Mid Atlantic, UMES and Delaware State have a combined record of 10 wins and about 50 losses. Quite frankly, I'm not impressed with the Seniors and Langley finally putting up numbers against scrubs when they got embarrassed playing against legit mid-major and D-1 competition in the first part of the year. The most important thing in building this program is getting your freshman and sophomores playing time and adding pieces over the next several years, that you can groom in your system. Morrice, Cleveland and Lyons needs to be playing at least 20 minutes a game, if you are serious about developing a program. That being said Ronald Jackson is a baller and the team has been playing better. Langley plays way too many minutes for the caliber of ballplayer that he is (dude has a 1.5 to 1 assist to turnover ratio, averages 7 points a game and shoots 56% from the free throw line while playing 35 minutes a game). Cleveland in particular needs more time running the point as he can never get away playing the 2 at his size. NCA&T has the stature and size to develop a legit basketball program but there has to be a strategy other than renting transfers for 1-2 years so you can beat subpar MEAC basketball teams. Get a more experienced coach and make a committment to building a program.

And FWIW, the 5 games under Coach Jones also includes the 31-pt blowout loss at Illinois. But no one is making any decisions yet. We're letting the season (and the data) play out.

I can't believe I am saying this ... but Jones might have a legit chance to keep the head coaching job after this season.
He still has a lot to learn with X and Os ... and basic overall strategy, but it is undeniable that he is a great motivator and the kids play hard for him.
This might be the most exciting men's basketball team I have watched in over a decade. Probably not since the Steve Rush days.
If he can continue to recruit this level of talent and display this fan-friendly, uptempo style of basketball, I would not be adverse to seeing him return to A&T next season with a 3 year contract.

All that I asked was for everyone to give this young buck a chance and keep an open mind when the season winds down.
Of course, the season is no where near done, but he's doing a helluva job so far, IMHO.
