Hampton Town Hall causes a commotion on Twitter and beyondHampton students express their anger after an infuriating town hall.by Callena Williams February 23, 2018 The drama at Hampton continues, this time it affects all of the student body. Hampton University held a town hall meeting this past week and students took to the Twitter to express their feelings and thoughts using the hashtag, #HUTownHall. The hashtag was quickly flooded with students angry with the responses they were getting when they asked about serious issues, such as campus violence and sexual assault. The students brought up Hampton’s poor history with dealing with sexual assault cases, which were apparently met with answers that seemed to put the blame on the victim. The way Hampton dealt with campus violence was also called out which resulted in a shooting victim being escorted out of the Town Hall. Mishandled Sexual Assault Allegations, Uncooked Food, & Mold in dorms send Hampton students over the edge. by True BulllStudents at Hampton University are fed up with their administration after what they feel has been the culmination of negligent acts toward their living environment. A Hampton student, has posted grotesque pictures of uncooked food, mold filled dorms and old buildings that have yet to be renovated on twitter with the hashtag HUTownHall. Before the pictures were posted, Hampton University administrators and students met together for a “town hall” meeting in the student union earlier this week to discuss the discontentment between the two parties. Students who were in the meeting say they were given the chance to voice their concerns about what was happening on campus that they felt was detrimental to them. Student sources say the meeting got off to a rocky start as students were bombarding the administration with questions. According to multiple students, Hampton University President, William Harvey, as well as the other administrative officials who were in attendance did not answer the questions that the students proposed in a proper manner. Students asked questions referring to allegations of mishandled sexual assault cases, mold on the cafe food and buildings, unkept buildings on campus and the whereabouts of students tuition money. Students who were in attendance say that Harvey was dodging questions throughout the entire meeting and when he finally addressed the sexual assault allegations his response was unacceptable to the students. Hampton University responds to student complaints of campus sexual assaults, mold in facilities and quality of food
HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton University students are raising their voices on social media. They've said no one on campus is listening to their concerns of unsafe food and sexual assault complaints. There are photos of alleged mold in dorm rooms and food on campus. Students said issues are routinely brushed off and silenced by administration and now they're taking their frustrations to social media with #HUTownhall. Students are sharing photos of what they say is molded food served at Hampton University's cafeteria. There's also a video of a questionable object inside a serving tray. Students are posting videos of poor living conditions inside of campus dormitories. News 3's Aleah Hordges spoke with a student who feared being identified, but still shared her experience. "I lived in a dorm last year I now live off campus, but there was mold in the shower. I have asthma and eczema. It was flaring up really bad. They would just come in and spray paint over the mold and spray Clorox over it and two weeks later it would still be there," the student said. The Mutiny at Hampton University
Michael HarriotStudents at one of America’s top HBCUs are protesting a long list of problems faced by students at the school, including sexual assault, safety, food and the lack of maintenance of campus facilities. The long-simmering situation at Hampton University is reaching a slow boil, pitting the student body against the university’s leadership and administration. Faced with a maelstrom of criticism over the school’s perceived apathy and lack of concern for the constituents of the heralded Virginia school, the Pirates of Hampton now face a quiet mutiny that has not only manifested itself on campus but has also spilled over onto social media and the public eye. Hampton trails only Spelman College and Howard University on U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 list of the best HBCUs in America. Founded in 1868, the liberal arts institution of more than 4,600 students is always included in the list of historically black schools known as the “black Ivy League.” On Feb. 20, Hampton students, frustrated by a number of unaddressed issues, held a town hall meeting to confront the school administration’s seeming indifference to the concerns repeatedly raised by various groups at the school. According to several Hampton students who spoke with The Root, the airing of grievances quickly turned contentious when students felt that Hampton’s leadership was ignoring and belittling their concerns. One of the more important issues mentioned at the protests and by the students who reached out to The Root was what the students described as a prevailing culture of sexual assault on campus and the administration’s perceived unwillingness to address the issue. And they making statements about MEAC institutions. Miss me with that. Harvey has probably stayed too long.

These issues have been there for a number of years, but now students are using social media to bring them to the fore front. They have been talked about for years, but in hushed tones. Kudos to their students for shinning the light on these issues. Now maybe Harvey and his administration will take the necessary steps to address these terrible conditions.
