Culver: After tough loss, FAMU coach Wood says team isn’t very good
By Jordan Culver, Democrat staff writer
Tallahassee - Florida A&M’s football team isn’t very good. That’s not me saying that as an outsider looking in. That’s what head coach Alex Wood had to say after the Rattlers were blown out on Saturday – for the third time this season. The Rattlers were destroyed 48-14 by the South Carolina State Bulldogs, and Wood didn’t pull any punches when talking about his team. “We’ve not very good,” Wood said. “That’s stating the obvious. If we were any good we wouldn’t be 0-4. We’ve just got to take what we’ve got and do the best we can with it. The penalties and those things, that’s lack of discipline. Like I told our coaches, that’s coaching. That falls directly on me.” Speaking about his players, Wood added, “If I could replace them I would, but we don’t have the numbers to do that. I only get them 16 hours a week. Some of them I only get for 12 because of classes. It’s hard to instill of some of that in guys, that disciplinary part – other than just cutting them. “I probably wouldn’t have a team right now if I just cut them all. We’re in a tough situation.” Wow. For the rest of the story and video: www.tallahassee.com/story/sports/college/famu/2016/09/24/culver-column-tough-loss-famu-coach-wood-says-team-good/91063700/

As I said on meacfanszone, when SSU beats FAMU next week, dude is out of there.....I don't see FAMU waiting until the end of the season to can him. They didn't do it before with their own (Earl Holmes), so I don't see why they'd give Wood different treatment. FAMU is a bad team. They remind me of us pre-Broadway....

They probably don't have the money to eat the contract, don't have a decent interim on staff, and don't have a replacement in mind. Even if they convince him to take a job in the athletic dept., who's gonna take over? Theo Lemon? Things are just crashing down there right now. The additional programs in the state that are fielding programs now combined with FAMU's current status isn't helping. Honestly if I was the AD I'd put feelers out to Brian Jenkins. Bama State isn't working out for him but he knows Florida and knows the conference. If not him then I'd look at the coach at Florida Tech, Ian Shields at Jacksonville (if you can get him to leave JU for FAMU) or Pete Shinnick at West Florida. All those guys have built or rebuilt a program and have Florida recruiting ties they've established. I mean, they in Florida. Can't be that hard to get players.

Only part I have a problem with is him saying if he could replace the players he would.

I love him telling those boyz that they suck and he wish that he could cut them! Lol. We need to enjoy our newfound success for as long as we can.

I'm with you...let's enjoy this success for as long as we can because one coaching change or injuries or NCAA sanction and we might be back sucking wind with FAMU. Not saying we will...just saying success isn't permanent. That's why it's so critical to take advantage of our current situation...We've got a great coach with good assistants, some good players, depth in key positions, and an AD and Chancellor that support the program. The stars have lined up for us now. Let's try to get to the Celebration Bowl another 5 years and make that paper while it lasts!

I knew that Coach Wood's comments would draw fire from their athletics director...From the Tallahassee Democrat: www.tallahassee.com/story/sports/college/famu/2016/09/25/famu-head-coach-alex-wood-ad-overton-release-statement-after-sc-state-loss/91080734/FAMU head coach Alex Wood, AD Overton release statement after SC State lossJordan Culver, Democrat staff writer 7:54 p.m. EDT September 25, 2016 Following comments head coach Alex Wood made after Florida A&M's 48-14 loss to S.C. State, he and Athletic Director Milton Overton Jr. have released a joint statement.
"After a long, disappointing battle against the South Carolina State Bulldogs, uncharacteristic statements were made, fueled by the emotion of the moment, but today we turn the page on yesterday and focus our attention on our next opponent and the daily process of building a top caliber program," the two said in the statement.
Overton, in a phone interview with the Tallahassee Democrat, also said he plans to evaluate coaches at the end of the season.
"Our collective performance must and will improve to match the passion, energy and support the Rattler Nation brings to every game," the statement said. "We believe in the young men who chose to play and fight for Florida A&M University on the gridiron, and we will continue to work to give them the tools and guidance that they need to win in the classroom, on the field, and in life. This commitment to our student-athletes is unwavering."
Wood is 1-14 at the helm of the Rattlers. Under Wood, the Rattlers average 12.8 points per game.
After Saturday's game, Wood was blunt when he said his team wasn't very good. He added wasn't pleased with the amount of time he gets to work with the Rattlers due to APR sanctions.
Fans on social media weren't pleased with Wood's postgame comments, with many calling out the coach for making negative comments about the team after a loss.
“If I could replace them I would, but we don’t have the numbers to do that," Wood said after Saturday's loss. "I only get them 16 hours a week. Some of them I only get for 12 because of classes. It’s hard to instill of some of that in guys, that disciplinary part – other than just cutting them. I probably wouldn’t have a team right now if I just cut them all. We’re in a tough situation.”
The Rattlers play Savannah State on Saturday. The Tigers beat Bethune-Cookman (a team that has been near the top of the MEAC over the last few seasons) 16-10 in overtime on Saturday. FAMU lost to Savannah State for the first time in school history last year.
Here's the full statement from Wood and Overton:
"Every win and every loss we amass together as a team of coaches, administrators and student-athletes. Our collective performance must and will improve to match the passion, energy and support the Rattler Nation brings to every game. We believe in the young men who chose to play and fight for Florida A&M University on the gridiron, and we will continue to work to give them the tools and guidance that they need to win in the classroom, on the field, and in life. This commitment to our student-athletes is unwavering. After a long, disappointing battle against the South Carolina State Bulldogs, uncharacteristic statements were made, fueled by the emotion of the moment, but today we turn the page on yesterday and focus our attention on our next opponent and the daily process of building a top caliber program. We will never quit in our efforts to return to greatness.
"We have never seen a defeated Rattler and know we never will. Strike on!"

Why in the hell would a coach even make that statement? Wood's been a head coach before. He knows better. And even if he was caught in a moment of weakness I'm sure he would've immediately asked that it not be printed or something. I'm betting the quote was taken out of context even though I'm certain whatever context it was in couldn't be that much better. I can't help but wonder if somebody who wants Wood gone got the author to ask him some leading questions to get that kind of quote out of him. He had to expect to be 0-4. I mean he could only at best expect to be 1-3 given the schedule. I know I dam sure expected them to be winless at this point of the season. And given the restrictions of course they weren't going to put up much of a fight against SC Steat. Steat shut them out last year, what you expecting? 0Aggierattler would know a lot better than any of us would, but my crap detector is starting to buzz a little on this one.

Almost seems like Wood was trying to get himself fired, doesn't it? Except Overton drug him back in with a joint statement with an emphasis on evaluation of the coaching staff at the END of the season. FAMU can't afford dead money on coaches at this stage.

They sure can't. And either he was trying to get himself fired and bought out or somebody else was trying to get him out of there. The thing about the buyout is he's there and he knows danged well they can't afford to buy him out in the first place.
With as many coaches as he knows it shouldn't be hard for Wood to just call a few and say "how do I get through this mess?" Hell, Broadway did it with even worse restrictions.
