5 Observations from the Celebration Bowl
David Purdum For the AJC 6:41 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015 A new college football tradition kicked off in Atlanta on Saturday, with a thrilling bowl game featuring a slew of big plays, a few tricks and a diminutive running back who added to his already viral highlight package. North Carolina A&T running back Tarik Cohen rushed for 295 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Aggies’ defense made a stand in the final seconds to secure a 41-34 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon in the inaugural Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl at the Georgia Dome. Here are five observations from the game: One-man highlight reel.
Cohen, a 5-foot-6, 173-pound junior dynamo, garnered national attention this summer when a video of him catching a football while doing a back flip went viral and landed him on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” He showed off that athletic ability Saturday, scoring on touchdown runs of 83, 74 and 73 yards. “We’ve said all along that Tarik is special,” North Carolina A&T coach Rod Broadway said. “The nation got to see him perform today. He had a big game for us, and we needed it.” The two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year also set up a fourth-quarter touchdown with a dazzling, tackle-breaking 52-yard catch and run on a screen pass. “We haven’t seen too many backs like him,” Alcorn State defensive back Warren Gatewood said of Cohen. Here are my observations: 1)The coaching staff took the time between the Central and Alcorn games.....AND PUT IN WORK. -they tightened up the O-line -they focused on more passing in the middle of the field They didn't treat this game like an exhibition. They went after it as it really meant something to them
2)I've never been a Quick fan.....but dude bailed us out big time in some crucial third downs. He played like how a senior QB in the bowl game should. Cohen was clearly the MVP yesterday, but Quick wasn't far behind. He played a gutty and mistake-free game.
3)The defense was ferocious. The 34 points Alcorn scored were very misleading. They had a good feel for what Alcorn wanted to do the whole game. If not for the punt return and the short field Alcorn got on Carter's INT, this game really wouldn't have come down to the end.
4) Aggie Football 2016......it has the potential to be the best ever. Honestly, we've reached our designated mountain top and we still have room for improvement with our program. Anytime you're the best and you still have the room to get better, that's a good sign for your football program.

Was it me or was Keyes lined up as a Tight End in quite a few formations yesterday?

We still have unfinished business with the MEAC and NCCU. We gotta win an outright title.

Question:
How do you guys think we'd feel if it had been Central or Cookman instead of us? Would we still be as high on the game?

Cohen and the close game put the icing on the cake. It was all that the conferences could ask for. Had we seen a boring game with BCU or NCCU it would have been very bad for this bowl. The conference got to highlight there best offensive weapon and he delivered! So no, the entire country would not have been high on the game.

Question: How do you guys think we'd feelif it had been Central or Cookman instead of us? Would we still be as high on the game? You have the True Football fans that will support their conference winner regardless of who it is and then you have the institution only fans and the fair weather fans that could careless about the game ! I can only say this . If this bowl is going to work ,we or going to need all three fan bases ! As for me I'm a fan of the game so if I did not have a other commitment planned I woulda been at the games no matter who the team was from the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference or the Southwest Athletic Conference!

I enjoyed this Bowl Game, I enjoyed Atlanta! At my HOTEL, The Alcorn Faithful were very cocky and expecting a WIN! NOT! There were other MEAC AND SWAC Schools besides the participating Schools that attended this game....................... Of course, since it was "DA AGGIES" I was excited and happy to be in Attendance I was against this game, but it was very nice, AND Atlanta laid it out for THE CELEBRATION BOWL. It was fun, I am hoping we get back next YEAR! Whether MEAC folks like it or not, THIS GAME WILL BE A SUCCESS! CONGRAT'S TO OUR 2015 HBCU NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, The AGGIES of NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY!p.s. I enjoyed the Alcorn State Braves fans, even though they were Served HUMBLE PIE! AGGIE PRIDE!

Dooms you are right. This game received a lot of attention from those looking to see if we were the real #1 Team in the MEAC. The MEAC and A&T really had everything riding on this game.
I'm glad the fellas did not disappoint. The probability of viewers and ratings for next year will be even greater, especially considering that we will be back to defend the championship.
We gained a lot more fans. I can't wait to see the ESPN televised line up for next season.

This was the last HBCU to win a bowl game in the Georgia Dome also. For the folks that were in attendance I hope you recognize the history you witnessed.

Question: How do you guys think we'd feel if it had been Central or Cookman instead of us? Would we still be as high on the game? Honestly... probably not. I would have watched... but it wouldn't have been the same. I think it would have still been a fun game because NCCU and BCU have diverse offenses to open the field up. But I think that Alcorn's running game would have had better success on the field. The big thing... fan base size. I believe our alumni base is a good bit larger than NCCU (I believe larger than BCU as well). And we travel. So it was a win-win for the MEAC that A&T was the initial representative... and hopefully for years to come.
