Aggies notebook: A&T names freshman Lamar Raynard starting QBnews-record link“He’s going to be nervous,” A&T coach Rod Broadway said Monday. “It’s natural to be nervous going into your first game. Hopefully he has enough support around him where we can calm him down and get him to play at the level we need him to play.” Raynard was named the starter over incumbent senior Kwashaun Quick, who won’t start a season opener for the first time in his career. Quick played in 11 games last season, completing 58.2 percent of his passes for 1,418 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. His 610 rushing yards were the most ever for an Aggies quarterback, and he ranked ninth in the MEAC in rushing. But Quick was arrested on marijuana charges March 6 in Durham and suspended from the team for spring practice. He was reinstated over the summer. Raynard, who led Andrews High to the 2013 Class 2-A state championship, flourished in Quick’s absence. The freshman went 22-for-36 passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns in the Aggies spring game. He also scored on a 10-yard run. “He had a good preseason. Lamar throws a beautiful ball,” Broadway said. “He’s going to be an outstanding quarterback. I just hope he can stay calm in the ballgame and play within what we’re trying to do. He has to understand that he doesn’t have to try to win it for us. He just has to protect the football, get the ball in the right spots and make good decisions.” Quick was 2-1 in season openers. He started two of them in place of first-string quarterback Lewis Kindle, including the 24-21 victory over Appalachian State in 2013. Now it’s Raynard’s turn. “We’re going give him the ball, let him play and see how he does,” Broadway said. “Hopefully he can start and finish. If not, then we’ll go to the next guy.” WIDEOUT WOES: The Aggies will start the season thin at wide receiver after juniors Xavier Griffin and Mike Weaver suffered broken arms during practices in August....

The lost of Griffin and Bullock not returning makes us thin Experience wise at the Wide out spot, but look for a Red shirt Freshman or true freshman to step up. The line woes are a concern we had a SR Major Key that was run out of the program. He could have played a Big Part regarding the O line this year.....

I can understand injuries it happens to every team, every year, but what happened to Major Key? I can remember Broadway boasting about the O-line before camp, now it seems like a major issue.

I'm wondering why he was run off...I'm sure he had something to do with being run off. It's about accountability folks. You just don't get run off for nothing. I'm done.

Now that's a different story and I definitely respect that. Sounds like the young man has his priorities in the proper perspective. I'm cool with that.

Sounds like a similar story happened with Bullock….I'm so happy for these young men to graduate with great majors to go along with their unparalleled participation in athletics….we are definitely now seeing the pay offs in getting student athletes.
Congrats to Major Kay and Darren Bullock….the world is awaiting your contributions!

i'm very nervous about our upcoming season, i wish we hadn’t been picked #1 in the preseason polls because that puts a lot of “pressure” on our guys and i don’t like that. i'm particularly concerned about the offensive side of the ball. 2 key receivers loss for the season and right now, our o-line looks kinda “shakey”. plus, a redshirt freshman starting qb?
if our defense doesn’t play better than we did last season (which i think they will), then we could have some issues this season. i think our offense will need a lot of time to develop given that we’ll have a bunch of new starters, concerns along the o-line worry me in that regard.
we should learn a lot this saturday against shaw, a game we should win rather easily. but its what comes in the following weeks after the shaw game that’s got me a little nervous...

All the MEAC members have question marks for their team. I can guarantee, however our questions will be answered quickly and Raynard will have a great year in conference play. Look at these next 3 weekends as "pre-season" games with the Elon game being our dress rehearsal. We will be okay.

Would not call these preseason games they count but I see what you are saying in reference to the conference.
My dream for the season would be for us to finish with one loss(UNC) (very respectable game with UNC). Setting the stage for a major decision. At large bid to the FCS playoffs or the Soul Bowl.

We will be okay. i don't think scsu has a bunch of question marks regarding their team, not even at qb as some folk suggest. not that their qb is great, but they know what he can do because he returns from last season. so i don't see that as a question mark for them. scsu probably has more returning "starters" this year than anybody else in the meac...

The game to really look at for Raynard will be the UNC game...if that stage isn't too big for him then he'll do fine in conference. But, if he looks like a deer in headlights then I will be concerned.

At large bid to the FCS playoffs or the Soul Bowl. unfortunately, if your scenario comes to fruition, i don’t think we will have a choice to make. i think we will be “mandated” by the meac to play in that, well you know, that game that you mentioned. if we win the meac “outright”, no ties or nothing? then i think our season ending destiny will be in atlanta...

At large bid to the FCS playoffs or the Soul Bowl. what major decision? the contract has been signed and winning the MEAC is the goal. I would rather win the MEAC championship and play that Bowl game, then to come in second and get a at large bid to the playoffs. The goal is to be MEAC Champions first time ! Then win this Soul Bowl anything other than that to me would be a failure!
