DURHAM — Excuse 2010 Southern High School graduate Desmond Lawrence for missing his N.C. A&T State University graduation Saturday in Greensboro.
He’s got a little business to take care of in Detroit, there today to try to catch on in the National Football League with the Lions.
Lawrence said loved ones who’ve waited for years to see him walk across the stage in a cap and gown get the point that it’d also be real cool to watch him run up and down a football field in a Detroit Lions uniform.
“It’s definitely worth it,” Lawrence said. “This is one of those opportunities that doesn’t come across too much. They understand.”
Lions spokesman Matt Barnhart said the team wouldn’t release the names of the rookies until they get to Detroit and have their physical examinations today.
But Lawrence, an undrafted wide receiver, will be at the Lions’ minicamp for rookies, according to his agent, Josh Arnold, the founder and chief executive officer of Synergy Sports International based in Los Angeles. Lawrence signed a three-year contract with the Lions that was brokered by Arnold shortly after the NFL draft. Lawrence will be attending the Lions rookie minicamp this weekend with other undrafted free agents, as well as draft picks and players invited to tryout for the team, Arnold said.
Lawrence is not a lock to suit up on Sundays this fall. He still has to make the team, and the Lions could cut him if he doesn’t do his thing. That thing is speed.
“Each level I’ve been at, I’ve always been the fastest person around,” Lawrence said.
In June, Lawrence finished seventh in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. He ran a 10.24 two days after running a personal-best 10.12 to qualify for the final. That wasn’t enough speed to beat Baylor’s Trayvon Bromell, who won the national championship in 9.97. But it’s faster than a whole lot of guys running around in the NFL.
