PHOENIX - When he went undrafted out of North Carolina A&T last spring, offensive lineman Nate Isles likely didn’t envision that eight months later he’d be dancing with a female reporter from a Spanish-speaking TV station at Super Bowl Media Day.
But there Isles was on Tuesday, keeping his steps simple as his Seattle Seahawks teammates cheered him on and a broadcast crew captured it on tape.
Isles laughed when asked about his Media Day dance, the latest step in what has been a fun, but challenging season.
Isles spent all season on the Seahawks’ practice squad, which meant every day he lined up against the NFL’s No. 1 defense. There were times the 6-6, 340-pound tackle wondered if he belonged.
“I had to get accustomed to you’re not going to win every time,” Isles said of facing defensive ends Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett in practice. “Like in college, I’m not going to lie, I did win all the time.”
“It was hard, man. I thought for a second I didn’t have what it takes,” Isles added. “But just working with them all year, now it’s normal to see the speed and athleticism that they bring.”
Isles, who signed with Seattle in May after trying out during a rookie minicamp, said he’s not sure whether he’s in the Seahawks’ future plans. But after some initial doubts, Isles is confident he can play in the league, with Seattle or elsewhere.
“I’ve been practicing against the top defense in the NFL,” he said. “So something’s got to come out of that.”
Like maybe a Super Bowl ring.
Everyone gets a gold star: Patriots coach Bill Belichick was asked Tuesday if one Seahawks defensive player was the glue of the NFL’s top-ranked unit.
