I know this might not seem like an age appropriate story , but it fits. I coach pop warner. If you win the region you go to Disney for the championship playoffs. Charlotte also has Pop Warner teams. They opt out of the Pop Warner playoffs to have their own Charlotte City Championship and end their season with that. It's actually identical to our(MEAC's) new situation. They opt out because the POP Warner playoffs and Disney is a TON of money and time on your parents. Also, getting through to get to Disney is a nightmare. The teams are beastly! (Sound familar) No one in Charlotte misses it. No one. They are happy with their little City Championship. Mallard Creek (charlotte team) came to Raleigh to face us for a bowl game. They were 8-0 in Charlotte and going to be in the Charlotte championship the next week. We were 6-2 and headed to the Pop Warner playoffs. So the game was strictly a warmup for our playoff run and their championship...... We beat the brakes off them. They hadn't faced a playoff ready team before because no one in their league prepares for the playoffs. But the next week they went out and won their Charlotte championship, while we got destroyed by a Tidewater area team at VA Beach in the first round of the playoffs. Who you think enjoyed their season more.? What fans, what players? It doesn't matter. I bet they celebrated like hell win they won their championship. No more travel, season over. Lets take our trophy and go eat at Ruby Tuesday. If we had made it to the 3rd round of the playoffs and got beat instead of getting eliminated in the first round our kids nor parents would have went out and celebrated at Ruby Tuesday because of a 3rd round loss. So I say goodbye to the playoffs with a smile. I feel you on that A.M. been down that road a number of times. That Bus ride back is no joke..lol

Point of order: Wake Forest has a one billion dollar endowment. Oregon has a 522 million dollar endowment. North Dakota State has a 103 million dollar endowment. Illinois State has an 88.4 million dollar endowment. Elon has a 154 million dollar endowment. Coastal Carolina has a mere 25 million dollar endowment. Of course they also have a head coach who could write a check and double that at his whim. And it was 17 million a few years ago. We have an endowment at about 30 million. in D-2 Grand Valley State has a 100 million dollar endowment. Lenoir Rhyne has a 54 million dollar endowment. Carson-Newman has a 49 million dollar endowment. WSSU has about a 20 million dollar endowment. Pittsburg State has a 73 million dollar endowment. Let's not get lost in this thing. Athletics is a "front porch" at best and a sideshow in reality. I've stated it before and I'll state it again, we are already a d-2 institution in funding, endowment, and enrollment. We'd be best served cooking the whole hog. I find it interesting that people are on here insulting d-2 like it's any worse than fcs when the fact is if Ayantee wasn't fcs the same folk wouldn't know nor care a thing about fcs either. WINNING generates interest, not classification. If we won big, we'd generate big interest. And we are savvy enough to know how to build on that interest (unlike our neighbors to the west who have only parlayed it into decent local coverage). correct me if i'm wrong, but its my understanding that few if any schools dip into their endowment to fund athletics. otherwise, howard university would be king in athletics at our level...

So we've had the LA City Section Playoffs for the past 35-40 years. It's only until recently that the CIF starting trying unifying things with divisional bowl games between Nor Cal and So cal.

But Wake has been a Ranked Top 25 Team. The Wake team of a couple years ago would have cleaned the current Texas teams clock.. I see what ohsixrian is saying while we donnt expect Wake to win a National title they can compete. Based on that maybe Wake should move down to FCS and dominate...LOL heck frisco, a&t has been ranked in the top 25 before too and have actually won an fcs playoff game beating the #1 ranked fcs "undefeated" team in the nation at that time in tennessee state. and, we beat 'em in nashville. hey, i'm not saying lower resource fbs schools will never be ranked or will never beat the likes of texas or alabama. anything can happen on any given saturday in college football. but my point was that those schools have little to no hope of ever winning a national championship... In the FCS most likely not. But in D 2 ranks we would have that hope and a far better chance to get to the National Championship game. But do not think it will be easy..lol

The bottom line is that the hope is that FAMU, SC Steat, or us wins the MEAC every year and that Grambling, Southern, Jackson, or a Bama wins the SWAC every year. That way you can get enough people in the stands to at least make it look half full and thereby halfway worthwhile.
No hbcu has a chance at winning an FCS championship, and we no longer even have a chance of going past the second round. The coaches and ADs know this and if they tell you otherwise they are blowing smoke up your tail and you are liking it. There is no hbcu that can fund a football program at that level consistently enough and long enough to make it a reality.
If we're going to stay d-1, and we are going to stay d-1 despite the numbers screaming d-2, then the bowl game and the aforementioned schools always being in said game are the only way to really do it. These presidents want to get their schools on the screen at a time when nobody else's school is on the screen. That's why we have all these horrible Thursday night games that disrupt everything.
The talk on the meacpage from the average swac fan is that the meac is interested in "following the white man" or some ignorant foolishness. It's pretty clear to me that ESPN isn't run by a guy named Lucious, but that's neither here nor there...
It's simple really. If we made the playoffs a) we probably would have difficulty hosting, b) we'd probably lose whether we hosted or not, c) we'd be lucky to get 10,000 to come watch us play that weekend, and d) no exposure beyond a mention in the sports ticker after some school with twice the football budget waxed us silly. That's just the truth whether we like it or not. If we make the bowl a) we don't have to pay for hosting or anything, b) we'd stand a good chance of winning, c) all yo country cousins would be there ringing cowbells and there'd be a good 20,000 or more attending unless we played Valley and d) we'd be on ESPN.
Logically you can't really vote against that. Emotionally you can vote against it all day long. So I understand the votes.

It's more than just sports for me, but unfortunately the sports conferences is how the general public associates its universities. monster, its more than just sports to a lot of people, including me and very likely high ranking corporate and government officials too. i don’t think some folk realize that. i think it means something to dr. martin when he negotiates for grants and corporate sponsorships. you’d be surprised how many high ranking folk are introduced to a&t merely by our association at the d1 level and by appearing on national tv broadcasts on espn. which by the way, espn doesn’t have contracts with d2 conferences. so we would no longer have that very valuable espn “brand” at the d2 level. some folk only view ncaa classifications in terms of how competitive their institution is at that level. but as i mentioned before, there’s a certain level of “prestige” that comes along with being division 1 and with that prestige comes more national exposure compared to division 2. also, i’m only guessing, but its my speculation that dr. martin views a&t on the same level as our pwc counterparts in north carolina and i think his vision for a&t is to dispel the hbcu “sterotypes” by diversifying a&t not only in the classroom, but also athletically. that will open the doors for many more grant and sponsorship opportunities. for me personally, its not about whether we play jv ball at the d2 so that we can become the bully of the ciaa. i’ve never in my life been to the ciaa tournament and have “zero” desire to do so. beating up on the likes of chowan college and virginia union does not excite me at all and it certainly doesn’t give me a big sense of accomplishment. i don’t get the same sense of frustration that other folk get when the meac doesn’t win playoff games because i understand fully why that’s so. and its not because hbcu’s are less capable in terms of our leadership than pwc’s. i could care less about playing bowie state, lincoln, and livingstone college. i much rather remain at the d1 level for reasons other than just sports...

Honestly, I just asked my son about the game 2 days ago. Son, you remember the mistakes you made when we got beat up in VA? His answer "Nope, not a thingr" . I dont think we learned or benefited much more than them at all. They played a 10 game season, We played a 10 game season. They were coached up. Our kids were coached up. I think we coached them up for playoff ball because we knew what they were going to be up against. But in the grand scheme of things. No, my players wont be any better off in high school than theirs. Cause if that was true Mallard Creek high school(same neighborhood we beat) wouldn't have just dominated Wake Forest(a Pop warner playoff regular) in the 4aa state championship a few months ago. A Raleigh team has yet to win a state championship.

So how do you recruit to just beat the SWAC , coaches go after the best they can get. Everyone else in the league will still attempt to get players that can beat (Furman/SCState) , William and Mary/Hampton), (Maine/Howard)( Delaware/DSU). I do not see any of those schools not playing against their in state PWC rivals/competitors. Nor do I see it for NCAT... Paper said Cohen and te Franics are running track

Paper said Cohen and te Franics are running track A&T will recruit the same way it has always recruited that will not change. You recruit to win the MEAC first hand and then you hope that your team is competitive out side of the conference. I don't see any reason why we can not continue too play PWC SCHOOLS ? Because of this game to be truthful this could open up more money games if we can find them.
