Well that means that A&T and most HBCU's will never make a dime in the FCS playoffs.

This was a great article...thanks for posting it. I'm not sure our fan base will show up like North Dakota State but the secret yo the FCS is winning. Build a team that your fans believe have a fighting chance to win a playoff game at home and the rest is marketing. So far A&T and no other MEAC team has gotten to that level. If we had beat NCCU this year and hosted a game we may have taken a big step toward that effort.

to me, i don't think the comparison between whether the fcs playoffs versus the hbcu bowl makes more money is the question. i've never looked at the fcs playoffs as an avenue to make money. however, i've always seen it as an opportunity for "national exposure" to people who might sit as chairman of a big fortune 500 corporation, or a non-black high school honor roll senior who's looking for a great engineering school, or that high ranking gov't official who is authorized to award federal or state research grants to universities. all of which would "trump" that little ole $15k that espn is offering meac schools...

I total agree its more about prestige and use as a recruitment tool. I just dont like this ideal of the swac/meac being a black thing. We need to embrace for all people. There are some great white football players and if we are ineligible for the playoff(although you all are saying that is not the case) it could be a knock against us recruiting a white or black player who is trying to decide should he go to Coastal Carolina or A&T

Hey we're a Black school and who we play at the end of the season isn't going to change that. And if we build a winning program and develop our players we will get all types of players. Let's face it, no matter who we play at the end of the year we will only rarely get the blue chip high school players. We just have to do a better job developing those players we get and getting a few more of them to the next level.

True.... we'll never get 4-star or 5-star recruits.... but we'll have a shot at some 3-star recruits if AAF can go from $0.5 million to $1.5 million raised annually. That way, we can go from donating $0.16 million annually to scholarships to $1.0 million. Then, we're able to free up $0.5 million annually in student athletic fees to do the minor capital upgrades to spruce up facilities in-house without having to request funding, and improve academic support. The Duke game Friday night really highlighted this for me. Duke has a roster full of 4 and 5-star recruits, and some 3-star recruits when it suits them. The 3-stars get to play.... but they're not the stars typically. HBCUs could be a great spot for 3-star recruits to come in and really shine. Right now, the HBCUs don't suit them because of the step-down in facilities and access. Overall, A&T has taken a big step up in dormitories and new facilities around campus as part of the Preeminence 2020 Vision. It's time for alums to be educated and take the next fiscal step.

Let's face it, no matter who we play at the end of the year we will only rarely get the blue chip high school players. We just have to do a better job developing those players we get and getting a few more of them to the next level. i totally disagree. i believe that a&t could recruit blue chip football players (relative to fcs football) which are 3-star athletes at our level. however, locking ourselves into being an "hbcu only" doesn't help that effort at all. if you notice, the meac has surpassed the swac in football ever since the swac "pulled out of the playoffs" in 1998 and that's no coincidence. prior to '98, the swac had always "dominated" the meac. but once you pull out of the playoffs, you no longer recruit and develop athletes to compete against the best. you only recruit and develop athletes who are good enough to beat the best hbcu football team, and that's why swac football fell behind meac football. sure the meac hasn't won a playoff game since 1999, but meac programs have been striving to reach that level while the swac has been striving to only become the best hbcu in the swac. once the meac forfeits our auto playoff bid, i predict the same thing will happen to the meac. there will be "zero" incentive to strive to compete on the same level as playoff caliber pwc's because it won't be necessary. our incentive will be to become the best hbcu, period. games against pwc's will be rendered "meaningless". whereas if our institution took the diversity approach, maintained access to the playoffs, continued to diversify our enrollment, it would open up better opportunities across the board for our university than locking ourselves into an "hbcu only" scenario. one of the main reasons hbcu's do not perform well against pwc's is because hbcu's fail to attract the best fcs level "white" football players and there's a lot of them out there. playing hbcu's only makes that issue even worse. however, increasing our enrollment diversity (attract more white students), maintaining a connection to "all" fcs schools (auto playoff bid) better enables us to pursue "the best fcs level "white" football players" which is one way to elevate our program. one of the reasons (not the only reason) the best fcs level "white" football players don't come to hbcu's is because they are not comfortable attending a school where they don't see more students who look like them. i think a good university strategy should be to increase our white enrollment, not only to attract more white football players but also because white students are "generally" good academic students and white alumni (as well as their parents) are more prone to donate funds to their alma mater. locking ourselves into being an hbcu "only" minimizes the chances of doing that and it re-enforces a 1950's mentality. let's not fall prey to the thinking of the 50's and 60's. times have changed, hbcu's are no longer 100% black. sure, let's remain predominantly black, but that doesn't mean we can't increase our white enrollment without sacrificing our identity...

Here's and idea...if we want to increase alumni giving do something more proactive than post on this site. If we each made a decision to "encourage" one of your friends or classmates to make a donation to the AAF in a few years we would be awesome. If more of us got one more donor we would be on our way to that $1 million athletic scolarship. Finding a non-contributor will be easy...they are everywhere! As the saying goes...Aggies Do! So let's do this.

I found the discussion about attracting white athletes to HBCU interesting. You may know that Wes Cole #77 and 6-7 334 lbs who is white dad played for Bill Hayes at WSSU. He is the first white position player (starter) here in a very long time ( I think). In the SWAC like the MEAC most kickers seem to be white, I do not know about the position players . I would offer an alternative hypothesis to the decline of SWAC football. Unlike this area, schools such as LaFayette , La monroe, la tech Troy, ark state started playing FB or moved to d1a. Kids from places like Port Gibson, woodville, water alley started. going to la Monroe instead of Alcorn. NCAT had a dt from Hermanville a few years ago but when his position coach was fired and his relative another assistant left he transferred to north Texas where he started for 2 years. However, that is just my theory. I have always been surprised that NCAT with an engineering program did not have greater diversity in football , softball, tennis, swimming and track

However, that is just my theory. I have always been surprised that NCAT with an engineering program did not have greater diversity in football , softball, tennis, swimming and track And your Theory is right ! GSU's decline had nothing to do with playing in the classic. Come on now. They have the same problems that all HBCU's have Money and poor management of that money. As far as the recruitment of the white athletes . Being real most white male athletes just do not want to go to and HBCU to play ball. Were as the white Female athlete will attend HBCU schools if they offer the major that she is looking for. HBCU's have a far better track record with white female athletes then males. Because the female look for education quality not dreams of the NFL or NBA. Also if your setting in the living room of a recruit White or Black and you can not sell the parent's on the academic benefits for sending there son/ daughter to your school before you get to talking football then your not a good recruiter. White parent's/ students are no different then black parent's/ students they want to see their child graduate. Sell the package you may get the kid . I don't care how many stars he or she has.
