How many of you would go see Morgan State play Alcorn in Atlanta if the HBCU Championship had been played this year? As I see it not many. And the alums of the other school feel the same way. Do not see the game making any money unless of course a really big name brand sponsor underwrites it. Of course I would have been there to watch Alcorn crush Morgan.....lol You are right...nobody would go see Morgan play Alcorn but eventually some better teams (A&T, FAMU, NCCU,SC State vs. Southern, Gramblin, Jackson State) will be in this game and ore fans will show up.

Gold Bowl was what it was called. NCCU/A&T played in it a few times. YEP...SC State played WSSU a time or two, also.

I don't no about that. I think that the game would be a sale out. I feel that we tin to under estimate the existent and reach of HBCU football in the south. An HBCU championship game in the ATL with the right sponsors would go over big .Reason being that we as a culture do not go to see the game, But to be seen at the game. Also if the quality if the game is on par with the billing. It can be pulled off. The only problem I see is this. You may have an D-2 team playing an FCS team if that D-2 team is ranked #-1. It can not be and HBCU championship with out including the D-2 team's.

You cannot convince me that a Morgan vs. Alcorn game in Atlanta would sell out or even draw more than 10,000 fans. It takes three things to get folks to show up for this game...great fans support, great teams and great atmosphere. I don't know about Alcorn but I don't think too many Morgan fans will show up. They may be excited about their team this year but they got skunked by us during the season. So one out of three ain't good!
I agree that with the right sponsors (with deep pockets for advertising and promotions) this could become a big deal. I do think with the right schools you could build a decent HBCU post season game in Atlanta but these two schools this year wouldn't do it.

No it wouldn't sell out. It would be a little better than the MEAC - SWAC Challenge in terms of attendance. It also would be a matchup driven game. The only MEAC team that would draw a good crowd is potentially FAMU and the SWAC team would have to be Grambling, Southern, JSU and possibly Alabama St. Of course if espn is willing to carry the game then it could be more about tv ratings than in game attendance. Overall the espnu MEAC & SWAC games do horrible; however the MEAC/SWAC Challenge did do well.

I'm thinking it wouldn't do well. Sure it's fun to see and be seen and see the band, but we generally do that throughout the football season. Postseason? What's really left to see? You've seen the band, you've been to homecoming, you've worn your new outfit... It's the holiday season and your football season money is now going to other things.

The Heritage Bowl didn't work for long. This wont work for long either. Someone else made a good point about it being Morgan vs Alcorn this year if it was already in place. Thats a rough start because of the mediocre fan bases of both programs.

I'm talking about having the two best teams in HBCU football playing each other not just the SWAC vs MEAC. We already have that. I would like to see a true HBCU FOOTBALL Championship not just on paper. I do feel that it could be a windfall if handled by the right sponsors.

That way you'll always have an interesting matchup. FBS games "invite" teams to be apart of their bowl...we could do the same...

thats a great idea and you continue to look to the future which would be making some headway in the FCS playoffs but you have post season play for the Baylors & TCU's or HBCU football

i agree. i've always said i'm down with an hbcu postseason bowl as long as we do not have to forfeit our playoff bid. i still don't think it'll make very much money and i don't think it will draw a big crowd unless the two teams competing have large fanbases. the swac has larger fanbases than the meac. depending on whether they're having a good season or not, the only meac schools who have a decent size fanbase are famu, a&t, scsu, norfolk, and that's pretty much it. maybe nccu could squeeze in there, but they only seem to show in big numbers only when they play us.
in the swac you're probably talking about southern, jsu, grambling, and maybe asu and aamu when they play each other...

An interesting tidbit is the Honda BOTB would be held in the same venue 4-5 weeks after this game and that event would factor into undercutting attendance for the game. However, we would draw in more eyeballs than many of the early games in the Bowl Season.

You would need to move the Honda event up and package it on the same weekend as the HBCU championship game. You would literally have turn the hosting city into a week-long homecoming atmosphere with day parties, comedy shows, gospel concerts, A-list hip hop concerts, etc.
That's the only way the community and causal fans would ever get excited about this event.
A football game by itself won't do it.
