Gwynn calling it quits after 50 years calling Aggie football games By Jeff Mills/News & Record jeff.mills@news-record.com Jeff Mills Posted on Oct 25, 2014 by Jeff Mills GREENSBORO — For 50 seasons, he has been the voice of N.C. A&T football: the low, rumbling, steady voice of home for Aggies everywhere. But today is Spencer Gwynn’s last homecoming on the radio. The Hall-of-Fame play-by-play announcer will retire at the end of this season. Just four more games, counting today’s against Florida A&M, remain in a broadcast career that began the same autumn you could buy the brand-new Ford Mustang for less than $2,400. Complete Article

Greatness on many levels! Mr Gwynn, thank you Sir!
from the piece: There were all-night drives after school let out on Fridays to get to faraway stadiums for Saturday games. There were awful press boxes, including the open-air monstrosity atop telephone poles at Maryland-Eastern Shore, where Gwynn and longtime partner Mel Swann hauled equipment up with ropes only to work in the rain. Sometimes, there was no press box at all, including working from the roof at RFK Stadium on a makeshift table amid a bank of lights.

This made me think. We need Him to call another MEAC Title!

in recent years, i've probably complained about our football announcers as much as anybody, but i did it out of luv. i've never advocated that gwynn and the guys be completely removed from the booth. i just wanted a new professional sounding play-by-play announcer, but keep gwynn and the guys around as color commentators.
nonetheless, its sad to see gwynn leave the booth entirely. he's "undisputedly" the one and only voice of aggie football...

I remember first hearing Spence back in grade school in the mid 60's and I fell in love with A&T athletics in large part because of his broadcasts. To this day some 40 years later, I still take my headset to every game to hear his call of the game.
A giant, a legend, and a true gentleman in every respect.
There will never be another.

This is his last regular season Home game. I hope he is honored at the game.

I've been one of their biggest critics but I respect his commitment and love for A&T. I look forward to him sitting in the reserve section with the rest of us old farts cheering on the Aggies.

For almost 30 years I have enjoyed these radio games and really appreciated Spencer and the gang. I saw them as AGGIE announcers that never tried to hide how much they loved their job and A&T... Since finding out here on this forum that they do it free kinda make it obvious how much. Spencer Gwynn deserves to see a grand finale with a HUGE show of appreciation from the university and all the fans.

They Honored Him at the game. They show some video snippets of supporters. Very nice.

It was probably one of his best broadcasts in recent memory. He really sounded like he was really enjoying what was happening on the field more he did the presentation. Hope our guys can win out and he gets to call an A&T championship on his very last go round.

It was good to see the University step up and show him how much they appreciation his contribution as an Alum, and radio announcer. Also the standing ovation from the crowd was a great addition that I'm sure he appreciated.
