The B&G MM was excellent this weekend. On the flip side, for SCSU to have an extremely large band, their sound quality was baaaaadddd. They were also off on many parts of their routines, especially their dancers. I know SCSU's band has historic significance, but the last few times I've seen them, A&T has had them for lunch.....and it hasn't even been close. I normally don't comment on bands, but this weekend was a straight-up mismatch at halftime.

They have the musicians to perform well but their band leadership isn't creative enough to utilize those musicians effectively. Rather than doing shows that are unique SC State has tried to use "gimmicks" in their shows. In the Honda Battle of the Bands earlier this year they did a disjointed tribute to Dr. King and Nelson Mandela. In the Charlotte Battle of the Bands this summer they threw together a tribute to the young man shot in Ferguson Missouri. And Saturday they honored Atlanta's own Hank Aaron. All of the tributes were noble but the performances around the tributes were boring. What's really interesting isn't that the shows are not good but that over the years SC State's band staff hasn't realized that their shows have become jokes to HBCU band fans.
