Have you ever been on campus and wanted a place just to hang out and relax for a few minutes? Where is that spot? I come to the Greensboro area frequently for meetings or business and eventually end up on campus. And each time I'm on campus I struggle to find a place to just relax. I tried hanging out at the Student Union (before the construction), the Starbucks (ain't like other Starbucks) and in the library...but they are not designed for old alums like me. I think we need an Alumni House or at the very least, an Alumni Room that is open to all alumni. Some place you can drop by, have a cup of coffee, read about the latest A&T news, update your contact information, look up contact information on old friends and maybe meet and talk with other A&T alumni. It doesn't have to be fancy just a place to sit and talk A&T. I thought the Foundation building was originally designed as that site but I've since discovered that it isn't.
Now for you young Aggies with "day jobs", kids and a busy life styles, this sounds crazy but for us old heads (you'll be there one day) this would be great. I have classmates that drive in to games and meetings and they would welcome a place they could visit, sit and talk, that was welcoming and all Aggie Alums knew about.

That's a good idea. They may already have one, I just don't know about it. But if we don't, we should.

What are they doing with "The Oak's" (the old Chancellor's house) He does not live there nor does he live in the Chancellor's house in Irving Park. What are they doing with these two places???

Its my understanding that The Oaks will become the office of veteran affairs and lounge for veteran students. Haven't heard anything about Irving Park.

Doom I see your posting on this site a lot so I know you are also a diehard Aggie...and if you don't know if we have an Alumni House, then there's a problem. The old Chancellor's home would be great but I'd settle for a room in the basement of Brown Hall or Cooper Hall. Just some place to call our own that's open to alums. Think about it, the veterans get a place to hang out but nothing for the alums. I'm a vet so I guess I'll have to go hang out with them.

What are they doing with these two places??? wait, pause! We have a house in Irving park??? I knew about UNCG's Chancellor's House in that neighborhood, but i was unaware that we had a house as well...I know that Chancellor Martin lives in his own private residence elsewhere. So what are we doing with that property then?

You betta stop playing and take your chicken box and old aggie spirit to that alumni events center.
There are two sides, the Foundation and the Alumni Side and the Alumni end actually has a parlor room with tons of old A&T yearbooks. We helped to build that entire part of campus which was initially purposed as Alumni Towers or whatever. Dang on if I ant gonna take a squat in the nice digs of the Alumni Building for a few minutes.
Secondly as its important that we just don't create a A&T Nursing Home Room.
The entire campus is our home and a big thing we don't do anymore is dialogue with the young pups on the yard. (Although for some of us that may be a good thing)
I used to love seeing the Alum walking the yard or chilling on the plots telling old ratchet stories of days long ago. Im sure in the future everyone will flock to the student union and there will be plenty of room for us old heads to hand around.

Side Eye, yes we do have a Chancellor's house in Irving Park. A really nice one at that. Renick lived there his entire time here and hosted many money raising events there. Martin chooses to live at his home in Winston. I witnessed several events there and they were all nice.

Why not do like other schools? Have the alumni build their house. Raise some money for the project.

I've been in that building dozens of times and I never saw a place for alums to hang out. In fact most of the time I'm over there the doors are locked and when I do run into someone on the staff I get the feeling I shouldn't be there. I'm sure they don't mind us dropping by to visit but I've never heard from anyone that we are invited to drop by and stay awhile. As for "dialogue with young pups" ...that sounds noble but how realistic is that. I hang out with the band students a bunch and despite the fact that they know I'm a big supporter it's hard to get more than a two word conversation with them.

MB1969, I agree that the Alumni-Foundation building doesn't give off that inviting, "all are welcome" feel. You would think that a building with such a name would be open to alums. Now if a group of Big Money Grip alums get together and build or purchase a property, where in the world would it be? My guess would be across the street from the Dudley Building, facing the historic section of campus.

If I knew some alums with deep pockets enought to fund a building I would ask them to give money to the alumni scholarship fund not a alumni building. I think it's a good idea for the university to provide a place on campus that welcomes alums to relax and talk. Hey they are providing a "veteran center" so they think that's important.

Why don't we just find out how to get space we already have more accessible instead of taking up more space? Folks we have too many wants, (NEW BAND FACILIY, New Union, New Sports Center/Convocation Center). Honestly we have an excellent space already that is underutilized.
Now if BDV wanted to look at buying space and we all get big donors to support we call it the BDV Aggie Alumni House, charge a small fee for alumni to come and hang out during the week and look at a few options for game days that would be progression.
I'm just sayin.
