We need to be finding more ways to "raise" money not spend it. Our only priorities should be spending money to build a "Championship Football Program." And to do that we will need lots of money for athletic scholarships, salaries for top-level coaches, more money for recruitment, equipment and facilities upgrades. And once we have that along with more athletic tutors then we can work on putting in artificial turf.
I know it doesn't look good on TV to play on a brown drab field but if we are kicking everybody's butt on that brown drab field, our alums will be happy. And if they are happy, maybe they will dig deeper into their pockets for some artificial turf. Let's keep I eye on the prize...Meac and NCAA Championships!

What he said. Look, we only play a couple of games at home in mid-to-late November at the most on odd years. That would not be on my primary focus for Aggie Stadium improvements. I would love to see a duplicate Sky Box built on the visitor side at the stadium down the road with reserve seating improvements and expansion one day (more marketing and advertising revenue).
But all that's way down the road. We have one of the three best football venues in the conference. So, let's establish a culture of winning championships and making/then advancing in the playoffs first.

But, wouldn't installing a new field be a facility upgrade?

I think Aggie football is on the rise so, IMO, if we have $800,000 to spend I'd rather see it spent enclosing the stadium by adding seats on the end near the Bryan Fitness & Wellness Center.

Why add seats when we aren't reaching capacity now.

As someone stated before " If you build it they will come" . What good is a 2nd press box are more seating when you have a field that truns into a brown mud pit as the season goes on ? Come on now. With a new improved field their will always be ways to market it for use when it is in active. More seats fine but you have to fell them. Two press box's lol now that is funny . If we get that field and it i done right and we continue too win. The field will not only pay for it's self but pave the way for more seats. We can no longer stay in the 1900s it's time too catch up and " put on the big boy pants". And if we are going to contenue to play catch up ? Maybe we should move back down too D-2.

I was thinking about that with certain field events like the javelin. Most field events are held at another location . Only the LJ, TJ, and HJ are joined with the running events.

This is what I don't get. A number of the posts on here talk about how it will cost us in the short run, but will cost us much less in the long run and bring in more revenue. So I don't get how it somehow takes away or costs.
The only negative I can see from reading the posts is that it costs money today. It's like saying I'd rather have this money and spend it now on a depreciating asset than investing it in something that's going to grow for me.
If it was me, we'd have had the stuff 10 years ago, and we'd already be making money off of it. Instead we still growing wild onions and dandelions on the field, and got the sprinklers coming on during games. There's a real money-maker for you (extreme sarcasm).
C'est la vie.

Dooms is right. We need to spend the money to have it installed now. We can sell naming rights to the field and host more events in the spring and summer to further offset costs if we need to. In fact, Athletics can start a fund for us to donate to have this installed ASAP, which they should. He pros definitely outweigh the cons here.

Couldn't the cost savings in field upkeep go to having more tutors and back into the scholarship account?

when you consider that 7 out of the 11 football playing meac schools (possibly 8 out of 11 if famu moves forward with synthetic turf) will be playing on synthetic turf this fall, that alone suggests there's a reasonable amount of "cost savings" associated with synthetic turf. when about 70% of all meac football fields have synthetic turf, that's a sign that it saves a significant amount of money in the long haul. i think the cost savings and lack of maintenance is the primary reasons most meac schools now have synthetic turf. appearance and recruiting attributes are just a plus.
you'll save on materials (water, grass seed, fertilizer, paint) much of which needs to be applied on a recurring basis every year. plus, throw in the additional cost of equipment (lawm mowers, spreaders, paint sprayers) and labor (salary costs) and we're looking at very significant upkeep costs for natural turf. but with synthetic turf, all of those upkeep costs go away. i think over time, synthetic turf will pay for itself...

(On average it's actually more expensive over the long haul and turf fields will need to be completely replaced every 8-10 years.) According to Fresenburg......that what I like to see "empirical research" Do it because you want it or you want to keep up with the other MEAC schools....but at least in this study it willl not save you money
