N.C. A&T budget likely will take a hitPosted: Tuesday, April 8, 2014 7:03 pm by John Newsom GREENSBORO — A week after UNCG said it might cut 120 jobs, an N.C. A&T official said the university is preparing for a loss of state funding of between $1 million and $3.6 million. Robert Pompey Jr., A&T’s vice chancellor of business and finance, said in an interview Tuesday that it’s not yet clear how many positions, if any, A&T might cut. Pompey said A&T is putting together budget-cutting scenarios for two probable outcomes: a $1 million cut as part of overall UNC system budget reductions, and another $2.6 million cut if the state budget office goes through with a separate 2 percent reduction... Why are we still cutting funding to education?
1. The depression is over. 2. The state had a huge surplus from cuts last year.
I think its time some folks spoke up.

Until the electorate decides enough is enough and no longer vote for these Tea Party right wingers in all these newly these gerrymanded districts, you will continue to see attacks on the UNC system.
They truly believe that a chance at a college education should be limited only to the privileged few.

so true, a1! tea party policies and agendas are geared toward benefiting the “wealthy”, not the middle class or those in poverty. that’s why they hate obamacare so much, because the vast majority of their constituents can “easily” afford healthcare on their own. so they feel obamacare doesn’t benefit their constituents, so why have it?
the tea party doesn’t care about the middle class or the poor which is also reflected by these state budget cuts. again, their constituents don’t have a problem financing their kids’ college education. so the cuts don’t hurt tea party supporters, they only hurt the middle class and the poor.
so folk need to get out to the polls and run the tea party out of their seats if they want to do something about these budget cuts...

The budget last year even went after A&T and ECU because we can attract out-of-state students an increase more than the other schools. So, the legislatively mandated tuition increases that were enacted last year and proposed for this year were to be returned to the general fund.
The republicans aren't about supporting higher education. We took a hit during the recession. Now higher education will take a hit because recession is over and people are working, the next few years will be tough. Even in my job at a community college in Maryland we are prepared for flat enrollment for the next few years.
Also...this round of cuts will affect student fee driven entities. Our students are worried about "where's the next turn-up?" but fail to realize the events we've done for years still cost the same, but the budgets aren't there to support them.
Alumni giving will play a key role going forward. During my May donations, I'm going to designate part of my monies to the Division of Student Affairs.

As we continue to face more financial challenges, I hope all our alums realize that we all have to do more. And blaming those fools in Raleigh isn't going to help. A&T and all HBCU's have been under attack since they were created in the 1800's and they will continue to be attacked.
As alums we can either keep complaining to one another or we can get busy raising money. Sure our complaints may help push the wolves from our doors for a while but they'll be back... they always do. Until we get to the point that we can fund ourselves, we will always live with this threat. Now I'm not naive enough to believe we can overnight raise millions of dollars to offset the latest round of budget cuts but...we sure as hell can do more to make sure our student enrollment keeps growing. More students means more tuition and more state and federal funds. And we sure as hell can raise more donation money. Let's face it...Aggies talk much but give little!
If at homecoming we only admitted those alums that made a donation to A&T the previous year, the tailgate section and most of the stadium would be empty. Somehow we've got to get our alums to realize that yelling "Aggie Pride" and showing up at Homecoming doesn't pay the bills for A&T. It takes donations for scholarships. Until this happens we will continue to complain.
