There's a spring in the steps for A&T's football team

GREENSBORO — Rod Broadway never thought he’d be this excited about spring practices.
Tucked away behind Aggie Stadium, for the first time since the spring of 2011, N.C. A&T’s football team is practicing. The Aggies are closing in on their 10th spring practice and have been practicing since the beginning of March.
“This is my 35th year (coaching) and probably 40 years of spring practices, and other than the last couple of years we haven’t really missed them,” said Broadway, A&T’s head football coach. “But I really missed them, because it gives you an opportunity to teach, and that’s the thing that we’ve missed. And those are things that hurt us late in ball games last year where we weren’t as sound fundamentally as we should be.”
N.C. A&T’s football program was without a spring game for many years because, beginning in 2008, it was mired in Academic Progress Rate penalties that resulted in a reduction of scholarships, practice time and postseason bans.
APR sanctions also limited the Aggies to 56.7 scholarships in 2009, 44.58 in 2010 and 45.83 in 2011. Last season, the NCAA allowed the team the full FCS allotment of 63 scholarships and 30 initial scholarships for the first time but levied a postseason ban.
