How did the team look today ? Yeah...I was looking for the same thing. Who attended the scrimmage today, and how did it go??

I went out today with my brother who came down from Ohio for the AAF meeting this morning. As far as the overall team is concerned - much more physical, bigger on both sides of the ball. Very impressive pressure from front four and very good depth along the entire D-line and in the secondary.
D'vonte Grant and Marcus Albert are a great duo at OLB and R-Fr. SS Jeremy Taylor from Kinston was dealing some serious hits up inside on the run blitz. Defense is pretty much there. We are much quicker and better tacklers than a year ago. Angelo Keyes, Danny Pinnix, Kenny Melton, Malik Hampton-Prioleau have bulked up are now solid pass rushers of the edge. IMO, are still need more size at ILB but Denzel Jones stood out. We have some help coming this fall.
On offense, we threw it a lot today which was not surprising since that is our Achilles heel. If I'm picking QBs based on what I say today, Foster won the #1 job easily and here's why.
First, what separates him from every other quarterback is that he can read coverages. We haven't had that at QB since Connell Maynor which makes him number one in my book. He makes it easy for the O-line to hold their blocks because the ball is out of his hands inside of three seconds on average. The only off play he had all day, the receiver let a perfectly thrown ball go through his hands and fumbled it straight to the DB for a pick.
Foster is not a gun slinger but what he does so well is he finds the open man quickly, gets the ball out, can run when he has to but most importantly he is extremely accurate both in the pocket and on the rollout running either side despite being only 5-11. Speed, coolness, and accuracy. He's been well coached. Just sound fundamentally.
He gave our first team defense headaches with a clinic of pinpoint passes in the 10-20 yard range putting it into the receivers hands in open space and he has real knack for feeling the pressure and getting away from it. He's quarterback smart, minimal mistakes and he just makes plays.
Quick had his good moments today, getting the bulk of the work in the second half of practice and had a really impressive long drive in the second half when he took his time and stayed in the pocket and planted his feet and threw the ball. But a other times he looked rattled because the defensive front, especially Mike Neal and James Morris ere in his grill. He had happy feet to ward the latter part of the day. He took some hits that were not pretty.
The O-Line is one of the tallest I've seen at A&T is a while. William Robinson is an All-American. Brandon Parker and Wes Cole are extremely imposing at the tackles at 6-7. The line doesn't have fat bellies just big tall guys who run really well. Again its speed over bulk. I like what I saw from new additions in Josh Mattocks, Reggie Tyler and Antry Small. Olin Leak is back after sitting out last year. If this O-Line can stay healthy they can be very good with the right QB.

Time Warner Cable Sports did a great job featuring our practice game today. The two or three plays they showed of Quick was either scrambles or running plays. They also showed the transfer QB hit several passes. I don't know if it was just luck but he looked good zipping that ball around.

I agree with everything that AGGIE ONE said... But for right now and as I saw it today, I am a little concerned about our offense not bring able to stand up to the pressure of our defensive or it could be a case in which our defense is just that good. The defense was very quick to close, and was so much better (at least for now) than our offense (we couldn't run the ball against them).
Man there were some big hits out there today, and Cohen was on the other end of one of them. He got up wobbly and went to the side lines, and I'm not sure if he ever returned. I like a lot of what I saw in all of the QBs except Quick (I expected him to be miles ahead of the others). Enjoyed the weather and the day... NICE CROWD.

Sorry folks, just found out that it was 26, and not 28 that took the big hit (Weaver not Cohen)

I agree with Aggie One's analysis. One other thing to point out was the lack of penalties. There were some called but not nearly as many as I expected for a spring game where everyone is still learning and trying to get in sync. To me that screams discipline and the extraordinary job the coaches are doing.

This defense is as good if not better than last year. A lot of kids up front are coming off that red shirt year have bulked up considerably with muscle and it was very evident in the size difference and the vastly improved pass rush. Actually the offense looked a lot better than it did last year putting the ball into the end zone three times and moving the chains.
Its always hard to evaluate "a team" playing against itself but you can evaluate talent and we have some good young players, some play makers like Xavier Griffin who had a good day and TE Steve Francis. The kid that went out with a stinger was Cameron Hill, a R-Fr. running back from Hendersonville and not Cohen. Their numbers were similar. Hill ran okay today but he better learn how to protect himself.

If that's the case, then who is number 7 who also shared running time with number 20, Daniel Robinson. Cameron Hill is listed as number 7 on the program and Michael Weaver as number 26. Is it possible the program is in error? Number 26 was shaken up twice and they finally realized that he needed to be kept out of the game. That first hit he took was high around the head and neck area.
